Subject: swim plan question
I just started my 20 week plan for IMKY. I'm using a plan from this site. My question is about the swim plan.

First of all...I am a slow swimmer...average 2:15/100M. I can hold that pace for a long time. I have finished 3 HIM with swims around 45 min...last one being about 43 min last year at Eagleman which was very windy and choppy. I am thinking I will be able to finish my IMKY swim within 1:30. I have been swimming pretty consistently about 2-3 times per week usually two times at 45 min and once for 60 min. So I feel strong in the water, just not fast.

Finally to my question. I cannot finish the planned workout in the pool anywhere close to the planned time given. For example: today's swim plan...4X75 WU...3X400 main set...and 150 CD - total time 30 min. It took me 42 min with 20 sec rest btw 75's and 1 min rest btw 400's. That's the other thing...the plan doesn't give a rest time...what should I be using? I think the plan is in yards and I swim in a 25M pool so that may account for a little time, but not too much.

Am I really off? Am I extremely slow? There is no way I can finish that workout in 30 min.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the 30 minutes is just an approximation as to how long it will take, not a time in which you must finish the workout. IMO, swimming for distance is much more important than swimming for a prescribed amount of time.

Generally swim the distance as the time is a rough guide.  I don't think you're using one of the D3 plans, but Mike R answers the question this way:

What if I'm a slow swimmer and it takes me a lot longer to do the distance?
Yes, the times associated with the swims are only estimates and your times will vary by +/-25%.  Limit the swim to 1:15 so if you get to 1:10 and you aren’t done with a particular swim workout, just swim a nice cool down the last 5 minutes.

For your workout today, I would suggest something like 20-30 seconds between 400s.

For swim workouts, don't worry about finishing it in the time given. It's only a guideline.  Doing the the workout as written is the important.

You and I have similar HIM swim times, so I'll let one of the fish people answer the question about rest time between sets.

For that I would probably work up something like:

4x75 @ 15" rest
3x400 alternating 45" rest / 20" rest
150 CD easy

But I think as long as you're completing the distances, and you're not resting for >1 minute in between each set, you should be fine. Just my $.02

Thanks for the input. I have been completing the distances even though it is taking longer. I will do this as long as time permits and doesn't go past the 1:10 mark as pointed out above. I'll also work on shortening the rest time btw sets.

Thanks again!
