I am looking to pick up a top and (possibly) shorts for my upcoming race. Are there any places in the cities that sell tri gear aside from REI? I'll go to REI if I have to, but I'd like to shop around a bit (and support a local shop if possible).

Secondly, how necessary are tri-specific shorts (as opposed to regular cycling shorts) for races? I've bought a lot of gear/clothing in the last couple months and spending another $100+ for a top and shorts for races may push my total spending into the wife-irritating zone.

Thanks.

West metro: Gear West or Start Line
East metro: Perhaps Now Sport or County Cycle

Tri shorts are a must. They've got a smaller pad than bike shorts and dry out quickly. Can't imagine what it'd be like getting out of the water with a pair of soggy bike shorts.

What's wrong with irritating the wife?!

I've got a brand new, with tags, size large, Louis Garneau Tri suit that I could part with. It is a black one piece sleeveless with orange stitching. $50. I'll post a photo if you would like.

I am 6' 165# with a 30" waist.

Check out eBay. The size charts from the manufacturers are quite accurate if you are worried about size.

Gear West is about the best you will get in the cities, or many other places.

I've heard it described as riding with a full diaper.

I don't believe that everyone has a sock drawer savings and loan to keep from irritating the wife. Heaven knows I've worked long and hard to fill mine for life's little expenses that the Chief Financial Officer needn't know about.

Hmmm... I'm a tall freak of nature. 6'4", but only 185#, ~33 waist, ~40 chest. I looked at the Louis Garneau site for sizes. Any clue if that suit would fit? A picture would be nice too.

I may have to head over to Gear West then tomorrow evening. We'll see. I suppose I wouldn't have to buy much more after I get something to race in.

stupid insomnia...

Tried to casually bring up the idea of buying more gear with the wife. She mentioned just how much I've purchased recently, but I don't think she's opposed to getting a race top and shorts. So hopefully it will be off to Gear West tomorrow evening. Thanks for the offer of the suit though.

Others that carry tri stuff:
-Some of the Erik's stores. Their St. Louis Park store would probably be your best bet.
-Some of the Penn Cycles stores.

If you are going to head to Gear West, look at their Tri club.  I am in it, and if memory serves me correctly, it was around $100 and includes top and bottoms, plus some other discounts on stuff.

Here is their website if you want it -  www.gearwestbike.com

Just to clarify:
When I said the SLP store would be your best bet, I was just comparing the selection at that location to other Erik's locations. As far as overall selection, Gear West is still the place to go.

Dang, I wish I had known that. I went last night and spent about $100... such is life I guess. That seemed like a decent shop, on the other side of the city from me perhaps, but a nice selection of gear.

They are at a lot of the races in the summer and they support the local tri scene a lot, which made me gravitate toward them more than others.

Since they are on the other side of the cities from you this may not work, but if you have anot worn anything, you should be able to return them and then sign up for the Tri CLub...just a thought
