Pre-race routine:

Got to the race in plenty of time. Set up transiotion area and stretched out.
Event warmup:

Should have had a watch on. I didn't know the swim was going to start so soon and I could have used more time in the water pre-race.
Swim
  • 23m 27s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

My swim went worse than I ever dreamt of. Between a bad set of nerves from being my first tri, to never getting warmed up, I was never comfortable in the water. I stopped at the Kayaks to get my head together and my shoulders warmed up, which ate up a lot of time.
What would you do differently?:

More practice and a wet suit. I have all winter to get ready for the swim and will have a wet suit next year if the water is ever this cold again. I got my first competitive swim out of the way and I know I will do better next time.

I could easily cut 10 minutes from the swim on my next race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Transition went well. I was so ready to get out of the water and on my bike you couldn't stop me.
What would you do differently?:

I am still using my mountain biking shoes so they had to be tied.
Bike
  • 41m 22s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 19.00 mile/hr
Comments:

With a lot of energy left from the bad swim I knew I had to make up time. Years of mountian biking have helped out and I feel I had a really good bike segment. I think I passed about 40 people, but many were women who started 3 minutes after me. I made up a lot of time on the up hills and was able to push it hard on the down hills. No one passed me on the bike which was a positive.
What would you do differently?:

I can use a water bottle that goes between my handle bars. The location of my water bottle is difficult to reach.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Good transition.
What would you do differently?:

not much.
Run
  • 26m 4s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I was a little stiff in the beginning after getting off the bike. After that the run went pretty well. I just about the half way point I passed my neighbor which fulfilled my goal of beating him. No one passed my on the run so I felt good.
What would you do differently?:

Need to stretch out on the last section of the bike to make the start of the run easier. Since I still had some energy left at the end I could have picked up the over all pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Burritos

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nerves and lack of wetsuit on the swim.

Event comments:

Should have changed the couse do to the mud. However with all the events in town and the needed permits from the city I'm sure that is a problem.

Practice Swimming, Practice Swimming, Practice Swimming.

Awesome job! The swim is the part that gets a lot of people, and I'm sure the weather didn't help (wind, rain the night before, mud). The first tri is always an anxious one, too.

Congratulations, TRIATHLETE!

Ok, Is it driving you nuts that we can't see our results yet???? I don't know if you saw I kind of replied to you under Kim's race report but if you didn't see it.....Way to go! Nice first race....I wish I could say nobody passed me on the bike or run - that is impressive! And don't worry about the swim...it will get better. I could not imagine doing that temperature water without a wetsuit!
Anyway, congrats to a new triathlete and maybe we'll see you in a race sometime (if they don't really close all the roads in the county to races that is....did you read that in the local papers Monday?)
