Pre-race routine:

Did lots of stretching, mostly for my ITB.

About 40 racers. A lot of elite triathletes. Everyone was so darn serious! Quite different atmosphere from Adventure Racing.
Event warmup:

30 min. run on & off, stretching.

This event would be 2.8k run - 800m swim - 2.8k run.
Swim
  • 18m 32s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

After the initial 2.8k run...

Started out terribly! Had never swum right after running and realized, after the first 200m, that I was not really using my legs. Got passed badly! Then just swam happily along, didn't force myself, but maintained good form.(I have been swimming for only 5 weeks).
What would you do differently?:

Concentrate on form throughout the swim.

Will start running or riding once a week right before swimming: I know it is highly unlikely that other races will start by running/cycling and THEN swimming, but I figure that type of training will help my swim when tired.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

From run to swim: Got shirt and shoes off and jumped in the pool fast. But, I had forgotten to put my goggles on, so I had to stop once inside the pool. Got pushed and shoved out of the way (rookie!) but it was definitely my fault.
What would you do differently?:

How about wearing goggles prior to jumping into the pool? :)
Run
  • 26m 38s
  • 5.6 kms
  • 04m 46s  min/km
Comments:

First 2.8K: Began much more slowly than usual (had not done any running events since Nov 03 and am currently recovering from ITBS), but ran pretty close to my 10k pace (12:08 min.)

Second 2.8K: Was a little unmotivated (after getting passed a lot and being beat up!) following the swim. So, I just ran to avoid getting passed by the few still behind me. Slow, very slow. I didn't get passed, but did get lapped, however. No ITB pain, good news. (14:32 min.)
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on speed. Was very conservative to avoid re-injuring myself.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching. And waited for the handful behind me to arrive.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My AR teammate had signed me up for this race at the last minute. So I hadn't really trained for anything this fast. My first triathlon will be on Oct 24.

I normally do longer, much slower races, which I am staying away from until I fully recover and become a triathlete :)

Need to train for speed and transitions. Had fun at transitions, was always kind of lost!

Event comments:

Had fun, tested the old ITB, got my feet wet. Expected to do about 5 min. less, but still enjoyed myself.

Will definitely take part in any future similar event for training purposes.

First race prior to OCT 24 oly triathlon. Can only get better!

Raced against/with one of my AR teammates (picture).
He beat me by 6 min. and almost lapped me in final 2.5k!

By the way, I am on the right.

well... you gave it your best. what else can you do? and it's really good that ou didn't re-injure yourself. my mom dances and didn't allow herself to heal all the way after an injury. she tore the muscle again and hobbled all through our vacation to china. so you did great. i know if i'd been told at last minute that i'd been signed up, i probably wouldn't go.

Sorry to hear about your mom.
Well, I took it easy on the run to avoid further injury, but still had fun and gained experience.
Thanks
