Total Time = 2h 38m 31s
Overall Rank = 131/475
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 21/39
Pre-race routine:

Drove up to Freeprot from Boston about 2.5 hours. Had a lg coffe and a plain bagel in the car, plus a 22oz water
Event warmup:

5 mile bike, 1.5 mile run, no swim
Swim
  • 29m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had to deal with a current that was going out, it took me about half the course to figure the current. This cost me alot of zig zaging and some time.
Transition 1
  • 03m 13s
Comments:

Decided not to go sockless or pre clip my shoes. The ocean swim took its toll and made this transition very slow. I was still light headed well into 3 miles on the bike.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 25s
  • 26 miles
  • 20.69 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a bit of trouble in the first 5 miles until I "recovered" from the swim. I settled in good, but around mile 18 I started to cramp which prohibited me from drinking and eating. This caused me some issues towards the end of the run
What would you do differently?:

Breathe deeper to better fight off the cramps
Transition 2
  • 00m 54s
Comments:

Forgot to take off my helemt. Luckily a volunteer at the transtion exit told me and I took it off as I crossed the timing mat
Run
  • 49m 46s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Cramps contintued 2-3 miles into the run. Finally I ran out the cramps at the turn around. I did not drink at all durning the run or the last 8 miles of bike. The last mile I started to suffer from not drinking or eating.
What would you do differently?:

Take in more fluids and a gel
Post race
Event comments:

Other than my personal race issues, the event was great. Very well run with more than enough volunteers. There were volunteers at every corner and every intersection. Plenty of water stops. For the first race in my life there were more than enough porti-johns, worst case had a 5 person line. The post race food was a lobster bake.

I've heard this is a great race.  Would you do it again?  Sounds like quite a challenge, congrats on sticking it out.

Great race, nice time splits!  I've wanted to do this one too, but I had schedule conflicts.  Maybe next year.

great race! it sounds like a lot of fun and lobster sounds like a much better post race meal than an orange and a cinnamon roll!

Congrats on a great race. I thought about this one, but the ocean swim scared me.
