What's the point here? What's so special about a triathlon bag that would serve good purpose for me to buy one? Is a regular gym bag or one of my technical hiking day packs not good enough?

I don't get it...

Those will work fine but they do have features that help, like a wetsuit compartment so your stuff doesnt get all wet. I never had one until my sister got me one for x-mas. Do I use it? Yes. Do I like it? Yes. Is it the best thing that has ever been invented for triathlons? No. Is it conveinient? Yes, I end up using it all the time even just for training, I keep a lot of stuff in it all th etime, not just for races.

Bottom line is, IMHO, is it needed NO, but it is nice to have.

I use a regular gym bag myself, always plenty of room. But I also consider myself to be a minimalist when it comes to transition and preparation. I have problems with people setting up beach chairs and a branch of all3sports.com next to me in transition.

I use a ugly "who cares about it if it gets messed up" duffle bag. I don't really get it either. Seems like a waste of money for a couple more compartments. They look kind of cool though.

This is my third season and I have only used a gym bag up to now. That being said, I'm about to buy a transition bag, because I am simply outgrowing the gym bag. I don't bring that much stuff for transition, but I have been running out of room for my water bottles (which will eventually go on the bike), nutrition needs (again for the bike), wetsuit, and shoes. The last race, the strap of my bag broke as we headed out the door of the hotel, because I was trying to put so much into it!

So why aren't those things on the bike? Fewer things to carry, less need for a humongous bag. Bike shoes, aerobottle, gel bottle, seat bag, Bento box (if I'm using it) all stay on the bike. Running shoes on the feet. Basically all I carry in my bag is goggles, swim cap, towel, race belt, helmet and glasses. Wetsuit on the rare occasion I can use one.

I love mine.  And I love it even more that it was free.  I like all the compartments.  There are things that I leave in mine year round (contacts, bodyglide, safety pins, race belt, tape).  I favor it over my gym bag due to the size.  I can easily place everything I need into it (helmet included) and throw it on my back.

I find it much more useful in my HIM races than a sprint.  I think it is more of a security issue in my bigger issues with the wetsuit, extra water bottle, etc.  But all of this can really be achieve through a gym bag.  Just user preference.

Did you forget to include "spare girl?"

i bought one last year (my first year)--it has a wet/dry detatchable compartment, padded place for my sunglasses, place for my helmet, deep main spot for shoes and towels and lots of other pockets for other stuff....computers, sunblock, gels, bars, water bottles, goggles, ect...

it's rocket science sports, i think it was for like $75--but i did shop around so i think i got a good deal.

I end up looking like a homeless person. I actually have 3 bags (none that I bought).1) wetsuit bag with goggles and cap (never need my cap but bring it anyway)2) one that has stuff used for the race itself. Helmet, all shoes, food, gatoraid, towel (that I step on)3) the last is extras that I might need; more food, flipflops for afterward(felt damn good after my HIM, duct tape, chalk (to mark my spot), drugs (advil...), extra goggles, mp3 player, keys..At setup, bag one and two get put in three and set aside. Everything is either on the bike or a quick toss in the back pouch (gels) or put on (helmet/glasses).
