Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Slept good. Ate a power bar and a mini-bagel for breakfast. Drove 40 minutes to race.
Event warmup:

Stretched and drank plenty of water. Sucked down a hammer-gel right before start.
Swim
  • 16m 23s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt really bad about this swim, but my time was only 7 seconds slower than Clemson. I think it was because I started inline with the first leg of the race. A lot of people started near the dock and that started them about 100 feet off course. I learned from that mistake at Clemson. After the first turn, we were going right into the sun. I was swimming blind at this point between the fogging goggles and the sun. The last leg was tiring, but I could see. Also, this was the first race that someone actually grabbed my leg about 5 strokes in a row.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get some good goggles.
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Felt good about T1. I actually passed 2 people running to gate.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my shoe is on good. This would come back on me during the run. The top part of the shoe folded under itself.
Bike
  • 45m 27s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.12 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt real good about the bike section. I attacked hills, got up to speed right off the bat, and actually passed some tri-bikes. Yea, I averaged over 21 mph. I did have to lock up my back tire at the end and flat spotted my tire. I may have to change it before my next race. It took a good bit of rubber off of it.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I think a rack of bikes was moved. I counted 4 from the end but it was 5 once the race started. I found my spot after the swim because I could see my bike. With it in my hand I went to the wrong rack. The numbers were getting higher on my end, but I think the Elites had their rack moved to my end because after the race I noticed the 1- 20 racers were down with us 300's. That being said, I lost maybe 30 seconds.
Run
  • 26m 25s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my best run yet. I felt great running. I passed a few and got passed by a bunch but for me it was a great run. I could feel my shoe for the first 5 minutes of the run because of the folded under part, but I got tired and forgot about it.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and walked around. After about 30 minutes I got something to eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I can improve in all three, but my run and swim still needs the most work.

Event comments:

First my prayers go out to the lady who had some troubles on the run course. I don't know what happened but I hope she is OK.

This was my best race yet. I'm so jacked up about my run. I also met a goal of getting above 50% overall. I was top 49%

My girlfriend and I also got to meet Pam and her husband. After the race. Turned out we were sitting right beside each other.

Moe's did a great job with the food.

Good race, Michael! Way to smoke the bike and run course! It was nice to finally meet you. I went to the wrong side of the rack in T2 also. At least now I know why. I do hope Amy (the girl who was taken to the hospital) is alright. These things are supposed to be fun. I'm sure we'll meet up again this race season.

Good race! I liked that bike course a lot, but could have done without the blinding sunlight on the swim.

As far as the girl, I was told she was taking a cool-down run with some others, and had a seizure or something. I remember seeing paramedics going to the scene as I exited transition with some of my gear. Hopefully she is well, and I believe they stabilized the situation quick.
