I learned almost 40yrs ago so it would be unnatural of me not to do a flip. Benefits:

  • Fluidity
  • Breath control (which breeds confidence)
  • Competency (confidence)
  • Mastery

I have attempted them sporadically. I am a 2 minutes per 100 meters kind of guy and think that if I could just learn those darn flip-turns, I could gain some valuable time. When I have tried them, I end up force feeding water into my sinuses through my nose and when I push off the wall I end up going straight to the bottom of the pool and then straight up like a capsized boat that just broke in half. I want to commit to learning them but only have two day per week that I can squeeze in swim workouts. Should I attempt to learn them after I have completed my planned workout? Or should I work the aquisition of flip-turns into the workout? BTW, I currently end up with 18-22 strokes per 25 meters.

I learned to do flip turns some 25 years ago.  I don't think that I was ever that good at it, maybe fair to middling at best!  When I started training for triathlons though I deliverately cut out flip turns knowing that I would not be able to use them in continuous open water swims.  It only took a short time to learn to simply do a one handed push off and keep my rythm at the same time.

My belief is that mastering a flip turn is a sign that you have mastered control of your body - including breath control - in the water. If you are heading in the wrong direction (towards bottom) after the turn, then it means you haven't got control over your body/arms. Your form is off.

If you want to master the flip, then I would advise getting someone to show you how to do them properly, practice a bit, get their feedback. Then incorporate them into your swimming. The more you do, the better you'll get.

I do them when I'm timing myself or when I'm in the middle of sets. If I'm doing a warm up or cool down, I don't do them. I do try to have a continuous work out or drill with out the annoyance of stopping, breathing, and turning around. If you have indoor swims, I think it's a good idea to practice them.  Besides, it's neat to push off the wall underwater and feel yourself cruise after a really good flip turn.

But, it's ultimately up to you.

Probably half of the sprint distance swims around here are in a pool. I would imagine that in a 500, in a 25 yard pool with 19 turns, it is worth at least a full minute.

I just started doing flip turns this year - I just started swimming last summer. It took me a while to get the breathing part of the turn down, and to not end up on the bottom of the pool. But, I find that doing flip turns is more like an open water swim than doing open turns. When doing open turns, even though I'd try to make a quick turn, I was able to cheat by getting more air than normal. Now, I can comfortably do flip turns for all my turns and its more like race conditions.
