I am just wondering if I need to buy a mask before my first OWS.

Is there any big advantage in using swim mask vs regular goggles ?

Thanks

I would use whatever you use in training. I started out with an Aquasphere Sealmask XP but switched to the Kaiman goggles instead and they work fine. Some people say that the masks are better becuase the don't hurt as much if you get kicked. I am pretty protective of my face in the water so it hasn't been an issue. I can see where it might hurt if you were Swedes for a mass start swim and got kicked though.

what do you normally use to swim in the pool with?   no need to change from goggles if that is what you are used to swimming with.

In fact if its your first open water swim I would be thinking best to stick with what you are used to in training in the pool.

In saying that I've never swim in a mask I've only ever swum in goggles.

I started with a mask only because I could not find goggles that did not leak like crazy.  I have since found some and get no leaks where I get some with the mask.  They also make goggle that are larger than normal.

Life long goggle user. I tried the Aquasphere and now it sits in my drawer, neglected, unused and unwanted.

Go with goggles. You don't need that much equipment on your face.

Can anyone make a good recommendation for goggles? I can never find anything that leaks. I use AquaSpheres and even they leak a little. If I could find small goggles that don't leak I'd try that. My last tri I had to close my left eye because my goggles leaked so bad.

I have a slender face and I eventually (through many trial and error and about 10 pairs of goggles) that I have to wear youth sized goggles. Now I just buy the speedo youth sized goggles that are completely clear and have a tinted pair for races and when we move outside for the summer.

All of the goggles I tried leaked except for Aquasphere Kaimans. I didn't try the Sealmask. The Kaimans are very comfortable and don't leak at all - even when I took a hard kick in the face. My son (11 yrs old) borrows them for swimteam and they don't leak even with him diving into the pool.

Thanks for the replies.
I use goggles too and I will most likely use them in my next OWS.
I have some TYRS goggles that offer a pretty decent vision. I have been very happy with them so far and they don't leak.
However some fog appears after 800-1000yrds or so.

I will look at the Kaiman based on the last post. Thanks for the tips

I tried Tyr and they didn't leak - except they gave me a MASSIVE headache during my swim. They suctioned onto the eye socket area. OW. Gave those goggles away.

I have since found and LOVE Dolphin goggles. I have high cheek bones so I need a smaller eyepiece and Dolphin's are just what I need. No leakage at all AND no piercing headache. Best goggles I've ever used (lifelong swimmer here).

Coming from a competitive swimming background I was 'old school' about my goggles and would only consider wearing regular goggles in open water.

BUT - I started having problems with them. I've yet to find a goggle that properly fits my face, so I've always had to crank them down really tight to keep water out. This is fine in a pool doing interval workouts, since I stop for each rest interval and slide my goggles off while recovering. In long OW swims, however, I wouldn't get this relief and eventually the pressure from the goggles caused serious pain on my cheek bones and around my eye socket. The first time I did the Chesapeake Bay swim it was nearly unbearable for the last 2 miles.

So I started using the Tyr Hydrovision mask, and I'm now completely sold on it for long OW swimming. It's smaller than most masks so there isn't a big drag from it. It has a great seal and never fills with water. It is UV protected, tinted, and perfect for outdoors. I only use it in OW, still using my Speedo goggles in the pool.

It is definitely worth checking out.

A mask is going to give you mucho drag but if you aren't looking to break any world records i guess it doesn't matter. I personlaly use the $10.99 nike goggles now but i was a life long sweede user up until a couple months ago.

Not needed. I use the Seal Mask XP (the smaller one) all the time, and I really like it, but I used goggles (OWS and pool) for years with no issues. Just personal preference.

I've been using the Aqua Spere Seal Mask XP for the past year and really like it.  My kids use the kids version for swimming too.  Any leakage issues are usually a result of not being tight enough or getting kicked which wouldn't matter what you wore!

I use Speedo goggles and I have no leaks or fogging.  It may sound gross, but I spit on the inside of my goggles and rub it around, then rinse them off - no fog!  I got lucky in that the first pair I tried have worked fine.

These are the only goggles that I have found to be really comfortable on my eye sockets, I used to get really bad brusiing around my eyes from other goggles.

And totally agree with jcdenton2000...that is the trick, I lick the inside of my goggle lenses before putting them on!! Have been doing it for probably 5 of my 11 years of competitive swimming and it always works!!

Spitting doesn't work for me. I lick 'em then give a quick rinse in the pool and they are good to go.

Can you show how a mask causes mucho drag compared to goggles?
