Elite 2493 Chicago, IL | Subject: laying out your gear in transition area... So I've been told that people lay down a towel next to their bike where they lay their transition gear on. Is that true? What size towel is the most common sized used? Also, how early can I rack my bike in the transition area? I'm packing my tri bag now that I will take to the transition area where I will lay everything out, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Thanks! |

Coach 9167 Stairway to Seven | Subject: RE: laying out your gear in transition area... Attachment is too big. Email me: [email protected] And I'll send you a PDF. Print it double sided, cut in half, and take one to each race. One side shows a transition layout, idea borrowed with permission from Michael Pate, but modified a bit, and a race day checklist on the opposite side with room to record race results. Make notes on it and tuck it in your race mementos file. Edited by AdventureBear 2007-05-30 8:17 PM |

Pro 6582 Melbourne FL | Subject: RE: laying out your gear in transition area... Your post left AdventureBear speechless! If you get there plenty early and can get a coveted end spot on the rack or its not crazy packed you can use a regular sized towel folded in half or thirds. If you get there late and have to squeeze onto a rack a wash cloth will do! I've used a small-medium size orange towel that I hung over my bike so that it is easy to spot. Makes it easy to find your "spot" on the return but in the madness of T2, you end up hoping for a decent area to rack the bike on and that spot may not be right were it was at T1. Good luck and have fun at your race!

New user 2 | Subject: RE: laying out your gear in transition area... I hope you don't mind me jumping in but I had a very similar question about the transition area. Doing my first tri on June 10 and am getting a little overwhelmed. Any tips for the transition area from you experienced triathletes? If you are willing to share the cheat cheet I would love to see it. Thanks - Marc |

Or just stick your shoes/socks in a large plastic bag (I don't like carrying around stuff I can't fit in my tri bag). |

Expert 789 Lake Forest, Illinois | Subject: RE: laying out your gear in transition area... I don't know if you may have read this somewhere else but if not, be sure to set up you transition area at home once just to be sure you have everything. Go through in your head (or in reality) how it is going to work as you come back to it after the swim and the bike. I like to leave my sunglasses in my helmet so I can't forget them and my helmet upside-down on my aerobars so I can't forget it. If you prefer to wear socks and don't want to struggle as much getting them on in transition, turn them inside out and put them in a ziploc bag with a few tablespoons of goldbond or some other foot powder. Shake the bag once or twice. When you set up transition (assuming it isn't raining) take them out of the bag and either turn them rightside out or just roll them on your feet when you come out of the swim. The powder makes them pop on your feet with way less struggle. You may wish to practice this at home with wet feet. If you subsribe to the McElroy OCD method of preperation you can also pack your bag exactly as you will lay out transition, then recheck...and again...oh and just to make sure... My wife has a great time watching this process... |

Extreme Veteran 574 Crossville, TN | Subject: RE: laying out your gear in transition area... My last tri had 8 bikes to a rack that should only hold 6. I saw a lot of people with their gear spread out over 3 spots that had to move it to a 1 foot wide by 2 foot long area behind the bike and not to the side. I set mine up with bike on rack, breath right strip opened on seat, race belt over rear tire, running shoes under bike crank, helmet behind running shoes, bike shoes behind helmet, socks on helmet, glasses on left running shoe. I come out of swim, goggles off, breath right strip on, number belt on, left sock and left bike shoe, right sock and right bike shoe, helmet, and glasses and off I go. In from bike, unhook helmet on the run with bike, rack bike, left bike shoe off, left run shoe on, right bike shoe off, right run shoe on, helmet off and off I go. I practice this a lot before the race and have become very quick. I could probably shave some seconds with bike shoes on the bike but my feet blister very easy so I need socks. I've seen people sitting on buckets drying their feet with towels, putting on different shorts and shirts, eating gel packs, and drinking water or sports drinks in transitions. I'm in and out of T1 before they get their feet dry. Keep it simple and practice. |

New user 2 | Subject: RE: laying out your gear in transition area... One of the ideas that I heard and liked was to put everything in a 5 gallon bucket (home depot etc). It carries easy, can hold all of your stuff, can be turned over to cover your things if it rains and can be used as a seat to dry feet, and change shoes/socks!!!!!! I think I will employ this strategy for my 1st next week. |
