I just wanted to introduce myself as I am beggining a journey that I hope will lead me to a 1/2 ironman. It seems a monumental and ambitious goal considering my current athletic ability and busy schedule but by breaking it down into small pieces I expect to suceed. The most overwhelming aspect is the swim...I'm a human water plow but I hope by swimming and focusing on form I'll improve quickly. I have a long way to go but hope to meet other people and enjoy the experience of training and racing.

Hi and welcome.  This site is a great motivator.

Many of us struggle with the swim...tonight a 10 year old kid from the swim team was in the lane next to me...he was swimming breast stroke and passing me up....I was swimming freestyle!  I told my wife this story and she said "Well he might be the next Michael Phelps".  I said "No. I'm just slow".

Welcome! How do you eat an elephant? Well, I don't, but I've heard it's one bite at a time. Make use of the training logs and all of the support here. Just by expecting to succeed, you've already conquered a large part of the mental attitude that you need.

Welcome!  I've gone from couch to 1/2 IM in one season, so it can be done.  Hang in there with the swim - you are doing it right by focusing on technique first!

Very cool, just curious...how long is a season? I am assuming it refers to a typical race season... Thanks for the feed back

Thanks...
I would like to target a race next fall at the latest. I am not sure if that is too aggressive or not. I know there of at least 1/2 ironman in the phoenix area next Oct.

A good rule of thumb (that worked well for me anyway) is to look at the training plans for whatever distance you would like to train for. If you look at the amount of work that it takes on a daily/weekly basis and go "OMIGOD, I'm gonna' die. I can't do that!" Then yes, it may be too aggressive. If on the other hand, your answer is along the lines of "Cakewalk" or "I could do that. Not very quickly, but I could do that." by all means GO FOR IT!

Don't get discouraged with the swimming. I got scuba certified 3 years ago and had to pass a swimming test - I thought to myself at the time, whoa! can I do this? And as unfit as I was at the time - I managed to finish the swim, and get scuba certified. So hang in there - you can do it if you set your mind to it!

Good luck.

PS. Isn't this a fabulous website?

Nice positive attitude will get you far... the swim I started out a few weeks ago swimming like a brick, I have since cut my stroke count almost in half and my breathing is so much better... If I can do it then...ANYone can do it... Keep tha great attitude and you can do it....
