Subject: 1st Tri = 1st Place (or so I thought)
I completed my first triathlon this morning! It was a Sprint distance with a final time of 1:11. While I was a minute off from my goal time, I was really happy with my effort and had a blast!

After checking the times, I was listed at first place for the first timer division. I definetly wasn't expecting that so I was pretty excited. I waited the 2.5 hours until the awards ceremony to get my first place trophy. Of course, the male first timer division was the very last group called and the crowd and thinned out pretty well. I hear 3rd place called, then I swear I hear them call my name for 2nd place! After a little delay to make sure I hear them right I went up to get the trophy and asked them what was going on. Somehow, they had cut off 10 minutes from the other guys time to jump him in front of me, but just hadn't posted it.

I was bummed, but still excited. I'm happy with my time for the first time out, and coming home w/ any hardware at all was a great bonus. I'm sure the other guy had legitimately beat me, and if so the 1st place trophy was deserved, but it was just a little shocking to find that out at the very last second.

Anway, I'll post a race report once the official times are posted. Great times!

Great job on your first race!

1st or 2nd you kicked it today...be proud...we really only compete against ourselves. Just think next year how much faster you'll be.

They often screw up awards/placements at tris...I waited at St. Anthony's...2nd largest tri for 2.5 hours for my award. In announcing the winners they skipped me, gave mine to someone else, as those with penalty's were off the list they were using at the time. After discussing it with them they gave me the men's award for my placement..very annoying/frustrating at the time...now I enjoy my men's award..it adds to the story & memory of the event.

Congrats on a fast first race!

It's definitely a good feeling to go out, do well and have everything go smoothly. Beforehand so many scenarios run through your mind, it makes it difficult to stay optimistic.

I'm not worried about the placement issue. It was disappointing for a moment, but now I'm much more focused on finding the next race that I can sign up for than anything else.

This sport is addicting...

Congrats on the great time.

Were the distances the standard 750, 20k, 5k? I've got my first sprint coming up in a couple weeks and now I'm curious how far behind your time I'll likely finish.

Good job man. I just did my first tri yesterday as well but it wasn't really broken down into groups at all except for men and women so I couldn't see how I did compared to other first timers.

Good job on the second place and the trophy though.

I got the race report completed as much as I could without the official times. Take a look if you're interested.

great job... you can't worry about those awards...

that's a super accomplishment... in the end you're only racing against yourself...
