I am definitely thinking about signing up as long as there are open spots left, it would be my second one.

Ha ha, I just looked down and realized I have on my t-shirt from Jack's Generic Tri when I did it in 2004.  Can't believe it's been almost 3 years already.  This was one of my favorite triathlons (I haven't ever really disliked a tri, but that water in the Cinco Ranch tri is FUNKY!).  You swim in the cable lake which has an island in the middle that you swim around.  It's a small lake and you are always close to land if you panic (can swim to the outer bank or the inner island).  The bike course is hilly which I loved because most girls suck at hills so got to pass lots of people.  The run is a 1.5 mile out and back that if I remember correctly is a gradual uphill on the way out and downhill back in.  They cooked hamburgers after the race the year I did it.  Anyway, it was a good atmosphere, you will have fun.

Not yet, as far as tips go. This site, and Joe Friel's 'Your First Triathlon' book have served me well so far. I've also started collecting tips, and recipies, etc on my site http://trifatboy.com

Would ya like to meet up either before or after the race?

I did this race in 2005 and it was a blast.  The cable lake was nice, because you could basically site off of the overhead cables.  Coming out of T2 they had two elite triathletes (I think Andre Fisher and Jamie Cleveland, but not positive) handing EVERYONE water pistols and telling you to assault other athletes along the run course.  It was a riot...we were all running out in the heat squirting each other with the water guns.  At the end of the race they grilled burgers.  Good times.

I'm doing it! I signed up for it before ever doing my first tri!! I've heard it is a good one. Just did Aquarena last weekend. It was fun! Jack's sounds like a total blast!

So I'll just wear my forum name on duct tape on the back of my tri shorts. Ya know, so you can easily identify me and such. Would be great to start putting some faces to the folks I've met here.

Hi there! I am new around this joint, but thought I would raise my hand about Jack's G. I am signed up for that puppy too and looking forward to it!

My last and next 3 tris are all out there at Tx Ski Ranch... blessing in that I now know the area, but a curse in that the hills SUCK on the bike! I need to ride the hills in my neighborhood more instead of hightailing it to Parmer all the time.

MommyBelly- Are you doing the women's series? I was thinking about it, but the scheduling didn't work out well with the Austin Tri. When I decided to do the Austin Tri, I changed my mind and signed up for tris that were spread out and leading up to that one. So, have you already done one out at the Ski Ranch? What's the swim like? Are the hills worse than the Danskin? If not, then I'll have no problem. If so, it might be tough. I'll have to look up the race course and map those hills.

My shorts are the same color as duct tape (platinum), so you wouldn't see it if I put it there!!!

Yes, Kelli, I am doing the series. I joined the Rogue training group and the immediately signed up for all of their races. I was going to the the Austin Oly instead of the Women's due to scheduling, but we moved our Disney trip so I can do my first oly amidst other ladies!

The hills out at the ski ranch are LONNNGGGGer than the Danskin. The Danskin hit you and they were over. The ski ranch hills you feel more. My MPH at the Danskin was 16.5 and I was 15ish around the ski ranch.... I attribute the difference to hills.

So I have the two left in the women's series and Jacks!

I'm in. I talked to the race director yesterday and he said that there were 206 spots left and filling fast.

It's a great race and the boys from J&A's do it up right.

Lauren- I can handle longer hills. If you want some good longer hills, do some rides on Southwest Parkway or 360/Bee Caves area. There are good shoulders on those roads, and they have some nice long hills for practice. I did a couple rides out there before the Danskin and felt very prepared. My avg. speed at the Danskin was 18 mph, but I had nothing left for the run. At Aquarena, my speed was only 15.5. The hills were longer, it rained on us, and I was trying to take it easy so I'd have more left for the run. I need to find a happy medium because my biking was way too slow at that race. I actually do think steeper hills are better because you can get going so much faster downhill with steeper hills. I can hit well over 30 mph on the downhills, then I don't slow down that much on the uphills.

Thanks for the tips, though. How is the swim?

When are you going to Disney? We went in February and took my twin girls. We had a blast!! I hope you have the Unofficial Guide. It is priceless!!

I think they had about 450 last year at Jack's, so it sounds like it is over half full.

I can't wait for this one!! I hope the temperature stays down some, though. Today is miserable.

Tell me about finding a happy medium... that is what I need to learn. I go all out in bike practice with the group and just gun it as hard as I can, then I hit the race and I am a huge chickensh1t. I am so scared I won't have anything for the run I just hold back the whole race!

The swim out there is great. It is a nice wide wet start, unlike the cattle chute at the danskin. I did the Rookie in 5:40 for 300m so I think it is a pretty quick lake. For Jack's you go around an island so it should be pretty easy wtih minimal sighting problems... i.e. keep the LARGE LAND MASS ON YOUR LEFT! lol

We are hitting Disney end of October. I hope to do the Valero 150 right before we go so we can go somewhere without me freaking out about trianing for something! I also want to do the 1/2 mary here in Feb, but that will be far enough off that I don't have to stress at Disney!

I don't have that guide, I may have to pick on up - thanks for the tip!

Cool. I'm in on the Valero 150 as well. It is hot, but not miserable hot out... I guess being from FL makes me immune to such things. Then again 2 hours and 4 bottles of water later my lawn is mowed.

Off to the pool!

A guy on coolrunning is a total spreadsheet geek, and he made a calculator that would calculate how much time you can gain by going all out on the bike, even if your run sucks. It is pretty good. Even if I ran a 12:00/mile on the run (which would be basically a walk for me), it is worth going all out on the bike. So, that's what I plan to do at Jack's. That's what I did at Danskin, and I ended up with a pretty good time, even though I walked part of the run (it was SO HOT). I'm in better shape now too. You should take it easy on your training rides, then go all out at the race.

The Austin HM is awesome. You wouldn't have to start training until mid-October or so. I'm hoping to maybe do the full mary next year. My MIL is doing it this year. I'm doing the IBM Classic 10K the end of October because it is supposed to be a flat course. That will give me a good 10K base time. I'll be doing the Galloway training plan for the HM. I just ordered his book too.

Yes, I highly recommend the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World (it is 800 pages). I would not go there without it. Go to www.touringplans.com and sign up (it's like $6 or something) so you can print out all the touring plans. We did not have to wait for anything! It was so awesome! There are other websites the book will tell you about as well to save money and such. If you want any other tips, just contact me. We had a perfect trip.
