Subject: Race speeds
I have been trying to catch up with all my TiVo'ed stages and have been amazed at a recurring them. Just how FAST eveyone seems to be going. I'm seeing stages that are almost 100 miles and they are averaging over 25 MPH? I'm I wrong? PLUS, their HR's look like they are barely working - 115 bpm? That's amazing.

I checked some of my last race results, and even the winners of my Oly race were only averaging about 21 to 23 MPH over the 40k. I would also bet their HR's are over 115.

SO - I ask, are these athletes just THAT much better? Or does the Peleton/drafting give that much of a speed advantage?

Being a long time biker but new to racing, what allows them to go so fast?

Today's route (stage 9) was about 100miles over 2 of the toughest climbs in France and the winner of the stage was in at 4:14 (23mph+)

Unbelievable.

the peleton helps, but if you check out the TT's they'll average 31-34 mph...

They're pro's....consider your local club racer couldn't even finish the tour de france route as a rec ride put things into prespective....

They're amazing

1. They are at the pinacle of the sport. You're team doesn't let you ride unless you are in the best form of your life
2. It is their job and it is all they do.
3. Their bikes are specifically designed for them, wind tunnel tested and made of the most high tech crap that we probably wont see for another 2 years
4. They are freaks of nature.

Sarcasticaly.... They ride lots, really fast.

Actually many of the bikes that the riders ride are stock bikes.  For example the Trek bikes (the new madone) that Discovery use are exactly the same as the ones you can buy from the shop (albeit for a lot of money).

Some riders have custom built bikes though, like Tom Boonen, but they are made out of the same stuff but just have slightly different geometry to suit the individual rider.

I agree with all coments.  I know when I ride in a small group of realatively inexperience riders compared to the tour racers I get the effects of drafting imaging riding with the pros when you are a pro.  But like someone else mentioned look at the TT times.  I can't go that fast at top speed on a flat or slight decline.

They're just THAT GOOD.

Even when I was racing USCF at Cat 3 (albiet the REAL racers were Cat 1&2) we never came near those speeds. Once in a while a pro would show up and ride with the Cat 1/2's and they could often just walk away form them whenever they wished.

Truly amazing athletes!
