Subject: What are your event commitments for 2004?

I didn't realise how powerful entering my details in a website could be. I have seen a lot of references to "....planning a sprint/oly tri in...." and was myself planning 3 sprint tris in my local area for 2004. That was, until I officially entered online, and now I'm DOING 3 sprint tri's this year. I was 'chicken' committed before but now the form (and cheque) have gone off I feel 'pig' levels of commitment, which is very motivating especially in the dark, cold, wet winter weather - so I recommend you go on, pick your event and get the form off!

I am also be trying to get a place on the 56 mile London to Brighton charity bike ride in June along with 27,000 other riders and have spotted a great looking half marathon around a beautiful lake in September - no application forms available yet though.... I've never done anything like these before and it really helps keep me going to know there's a definite purpose to all the training time I'm putting in.

Just wondering what events everyone WILL be doing 2004 and beyond?

Good luck with the sprints! I don't think i really know what I'm getting into with the cycle but it can't be THAT far can it? I'm sure the first time I'm back out on the roads in Spring and realise how far I don't actually go, it will scare me somewhat. But what the hell.......

I am signed up for the "Race the Rockies" sprint series, which consists of 3 sprint tris. Two in Boulder and one in Estes Park Colorado. I agree that paying the entrance fee is a good motivator to get back in the gym

They have a newbie division that I have signed up for and they have prizes for the individuals who show the most improvement over the course of the series

Anyone else in the Rocky Mountain area looked into this series. If so I will see you there!

I am signed up for the Miami Marathon a week from Sunday (already!), St. Anthony's Tri (Oly) in April, and Long Distance Tri World Championships in Sweden in July (I can't wait!). I might do short course duathlon nationals in August (my swimming's not so hot; I may be better off wtihout!). There are a lot of sprint du's and tri's in the area and I don't really know which ones I'll do, but I want to do at least 3 sanctioned du's this year to get USAT ranked.

Way to take the plunge on your sprints, Bigpikle. Now you HAVE to do them! When are they? Don't forget the RR.

I must say that laying out the dinero for the events is a damn good motivator...if you need another one, just smack talk to your friends about how you're going to do these events....the fact of saving face in front of them is motivation enough...that is for me, at least...I always was such a pushover for peer pressure.

I got a spring lined up in April, an Olympic distance in June and based on how that goes, may push for the vineman half tri in August out here in beeeeeautiful Sonoma County.

Well, I planned on sprints, but they filled up in 5 minutes.

My 1st tri will be a 1/2IM, 1.5mi swim, 56mi bike 13 mi run ... Springfield Stoneman.

Normally, I would like to test the waters by sticking my toe in, this time I'm not gonna just jump in ... I'm gonna cannonball it. Whoooooooo. My onlydecision is whether to drink a celebratory beer after the swim or not. Heck, I should throw one in the bottle holder.

After that it all Olympic distance.

Maybe it's better this way, I seem to go forever at 150HR, but my "sprint speed" ain't much faster.

Well I got into this sport to see if I still had a pair (I'm not talking running shoes) ... I guess I'll find out.

well, I'm planning on 3 or 4 Sprints and an Oly as my "A" race. Of course this all depends on what ortho says when I see him next week. If he is agreeable (and I expect him to be, he is an athlete) then I will mail the Oly application. The app for the sprint series is not available yet but I'll do that as soon as it becomes available because it sells out fast. The June race will be sold out before the end of March.

I'm planning for a mini-sprint in March (my wife is doing tri's with me and wants something easy - good excuse for me), a longer sprint in May, an Oly in June. The June race is my A-priority race for the first half of the year.

I'm looking for another race or two in the summer / fall.

think I'll take today to get the paperwork in on the first three . . .

I plan to do 3 or 4 Sprints this year. I have signed up (and paid for) 2 so far. The first is in June and am doing "My Frist Triathlon" even though it isn't. I am bringing a friend into the triathlon world and doing this one for her. Another I just signed up for is in July. The other two are not yet available to register for yet, but I will be checking into them periodically to get on the roster.

It is indeed a good motivator to continue training through the year.

I registered for the Denver Danskin July 18th, and am considering the Loveland Spring Chill triathlon May 2nd to get a "before" time. We shall see. This summer is super busy for me with traveling (San Fran, my wedding, Boston, then 2 weeks in Europe), so just training for and finishing one sprint will be great .

Ron - Brighton has a big beach and is a major coastal resort on the South Coast of England. It is gravel and not nearly as nice as the long sandy beaches I see in California, Florida etc but the water (and usually the weather) is so cold you dont really notice!! The best UK beaches are in the South West in Devon & Cornwall (IMHO) but I guess I'll probably get challenged on that one! Are you planning a trip over?

My races are spread out with the first on 2nd May, then 4th July and then on 15th Aug. I hope that will mean I can fine tune between races a little when I work out which bits cause me real problems each time! My challenge is trying to get some training for speed in each discipline as I have the basic endurance for a sprint now, but also want to focus on increasing my endurance further so I can do the longer cycle in June and the half marathonm in Sept? I reckon building my base endurance is the priority even if that means I am too slow in the sprints as my assumption (??) is that if I can run a slow half marathon fairly easily I can probably push it over 5km even if I've done relatively little faster running in training??? I plan to change my run workouts around end Feb to be a long low intensity weekend run (building up to the 13 miles by Sept) and a short hill/fast run of about 5km midweek. Any feedback appreciated.

Good luck on everybodies races this year. I used to not deceid until a week before the race was here. My big race is going to be a full Iron distance. With that on the table, my schedual has to be much better planned. I am also looking at a couple of olympic distance races, and a sprint or two, to remeber what a race feels like.

I might be doing the steelhead Half iron distance. This race is on a great beach in West Michigan. We have the best beaches in the world(they are even nice to look at when the lake to starts to freeze in the winter.

Kimber, congrats on the wedding. Any chance your fiancee is a triathlete too?

Robbertcj, when are you planning on doing the full IM? This year or next? Best of luck with training and the big day.

I've got a couple races going:

Doing a century in Chico, California in March

Oly distance first weekend of May (The Wildflower--locally known as the Woodstock of triathlons, as you have to camp because it is in the middle of freakin' nowhere!)

I'll probably do the Folsom Oly and another century in July

The Providian Relay in October (it's a 200 mile race that you run as a team, with three running shifts in the space of about 30 hours totalling ~18 miles.)

LASTLY--I AM DOING A 1/2 IRON MAN IN SEPTEMBER!! Called the Big Kahuna located in Santa Cruz. Just a leetle nervous about that one!

Nancy--The Vineman is a qualifier race and very hard to get into. You might want to consider Barb's Race which is the same exact course but a women only event. I think it is a week earlier than the Vineman.

I've only done one Olympic distance before, so all of these distances are brand new for me, but I'm really excited about the challenge.

That's it for me!

Tri-in real hard,
Dana

ahhh, thanks for the info on the vineman...saw the site, but wasn't too sure if it was a qualifying event. I was debating about barb's as it's women only and think that may be the way to go. I'll "work up to" the competing portion of tris after I get a couple under me belt.

My friend's doing wildflower in May and if I don't do the century which I think is that same day I may rally and head out to see him compete and will definitely cheer you on in the process too!
