i've been reading quite a few entries about people already beginning their base building for next year. IMHO, relax! i know this is harder to do then it is to say, but work on other things such as strength training and other active excercises. also, strength training now while your cardio is low will enable you to retain the extra lean muscle mass that is hard to develop when your training kicks into full gear. i made the mistake of base building way too early last year and drove my body tired. you'll have plenty of time for prep and base1 soon enough and this time should be used to clear your mind, give the ol' body a break and visit your loved ones that won't see you in the upcoming months.

But, I have no base. And, if I don't work on it now, ...

I see. A few of the suggestions that I'm applying is working on my major limiter during the off season. Mine is bike ME so I might do a month of biking everyday in Z1 and Z2 with a long ride during the weekend with specific workouts such as big gear/low cadence/hill work. Just be sure to allow yourself enough flexibility that you won't beat yourself up if you miss a workout or two. Your body is cyclical which is why our training is as well (prep, base1,2,3 build 1,2 peak ects).

I have to keep reminding myself to stay in Z1 and Z2. Anything over should only be reserved for any running races I do.

I'm in the same boat. I've only been doing this for 10 weeks now. Finally starting to see some endurance building without skyrocketing my heart rate. After my 16 week sprint plan is over, I'll be likely adding some strength, but until then just base building.

Keep in mind that everybody is different, our goals are different, and what works for you might not work for the next person.  I, for example, will be increasing my base in each, as I plan on doing longer triathlons next season.  I'm a big believer in over-distance training: to run 10K well, you should be able to run at least 10 miles, etc.

Also, not everyone has the Triathletes Training Bible, and doesn't know about prep, base 1, etc.  As we're beginners here, I think it's probably more appropriate to talk about base building, speed work, and race/peak.

I'm still planning my training regimine for over winter.

I've had just about a month of light exercise since my last tri.

My plan for winter is bumping weights back up a bit ( I definitely noticed a loss in muscle mass from the start to the end of the season ) and working on a run-focused base building. Swim and bike I'm pretty decent, but my run is where I need the most work. I certainly want to get swim and bike faster ( 1500m swim time is ~25-26min now, 40k bike is ~1:15 ) but I can get the most 'bang' out of improving my run ( 55-65 min for 10k ).

If I get my 10k runs down to under 50min, then I'll be on the cusp of a 2:30 oly time, which is my target for next season. I should be able to get a few more minutes between the bike and swim as well, but definitely I need to focus on running.

I'm still doing light workouts and lots of resting the rest of this month, probably until about mid November or so. Definitely need to let my body recover from the shock of a first season of tris.

joeinco-i agree w/you. i don't think i was clear with my post and a bit too haste in description.

last year, i drove myself into the ground with double workouts trying to build a bigger base..the only problem was as a newbie, my body wasn't prepared to handle such training. it would have been more effective had i backed off and began with a true unstructured program to ease my body back in..followed by a proper base and build.

Bingo!  At this point in the season, there is NO need for 2-a-day workouts, unless you're doing a marathon or some such 'A' race.  I, too, have bumped up the weights, but I'm quite content to have a lot of long, slow runs, swims, bikes, etc.

Although once ski season starts, I want long, FAST runs!

That may be true, but I'd rather follow the ski-bunnies down the slopes!

NOW WE KNOW!

Joe trains for triathlons so he can chase (and catch?) women in the winters!
A worthy goal if ever there was one!

I had established a base at the beginning of the year for sprint triathlons.  Now that I have done a few of these this year, I plan on doing sprints in May and June, an olympic in July and August and a1/2 IM in September.  In order to do this, I have to start establishing a new base now; if I wait until spring, it will be too late.  Also, if I let myself go too long, I will turn into a big old pud!

This might not apply to beginners, but after training pretty much constantly for four years, I got a foot injury without health insurance, leading to a nice 6-month layoff. I think that time off helped overall though, because it also let me rest those nagging aches and pains that never go away if you're constantly base training. I had a big PR in the 15K distance this year, and I expect that other distances will improve a lot too. So yeah, relax, especially if you've hit a plateau.

hi, trilover
thank you for a good advice, i really apreciate it! i have red it yesterday and really thought about it.
i have no base, so starting one or two months later will make no real difference. instead of that i will do first some other excercise and strenght trainig like you said. I have VCR with some good workout to prepare my joints etc, do some yoga, and go back to the gym to put some lean mass on, i really need it! after month or two or three i will see what next. (i think swimming). in 12 weeks from now i can do miraculous things strenghtwise, i know that, and it will still be the midle of the winter and just right time to start a base building. excellent. (my winter plans were really bothering me, i was not really looking forward running in the darkness and mud, prospects of buying flashlight was not apealing at all; but i love weights, this is something i can enjoy very much, and now my motivation is really high!)

when i think back, that is what was missing last year. thank you for this insight.
