I did this as a poll because I know that there are mounds of scientific data supporting each.  I want to know in general:  Do you go by what you feel i.e. your Perceived exertion/ effort, do you train by what your heart rate monitor is telling you or both. I also added an option if you are one of those fly by the seat of your pants types that depending on whether its a full moon or how the wind is blowing that day.

Thanks,

Dale

I put both, because I do record HR.  But I generally go more by RPE than HR, because I only recently got an HRM.  I'm pretty comfortable with RPE; I use the HR as more of a general reference.

I ahve always trained and raced using HR only and for me, have never ended a race feeling, from the standpoint of PE, that had any more to give, so it's worked well for me.

I'm 80-90% RPE, some HR.  Using the HR data to fine tune leading up to my marathon this year.  I really enjoy running by RPE and think of using the HR data like speed and interval training.  Something to use as I build up to a race, not necessary for the majority of the running I do.

I train strickly by HR.   But I race strictly on RPE.  Now, this is HIM and below.  My one foray into IM I was HR on the bike, RPE on the run.

Usually I'll either go out and do whatever I'm feeling up to, or sometimes plan to shoot for a certain PE depending on what the rest of the week has been like, but I just got a HRM so am starting to try it out.

For running my previous coach has had us try to shoot for 5 different pace intensities - easy, lactate threshold, VO2 Max, speed and long run paces using this calculator that you plug your current 5K time into - I've found it pretty handy for monitoring PE.

Both; why limit yourself with one way to measure/gauge your effort when you can use two an enhance it. Add to that a power meter (bike) and GPS/foot pod (run) and you have LOTS of great information to help you train more efficiently and race better. It always take the pacing guessing out of the question.

That been said, the more you get in tune with your body the less you tend to rely on HR/PM/GPS and you go by feel cuz you pretty much know at what pace or what sort of wattage feels like. I can pretty much tell what sort of effort I am putting on the bike or what pace I am racing at without having those tools. Still I choose to train and race with it cuz the data collected is great for post-analysis, even when I might not pay too much attention to it during the race.

None-too-serious technophobe athlete here.  RPE.  I plan to get a HRM and start attempting HR training by the time I start preparing for my first half-iron next year.  For now, it's just sort of "maintenance" workouts, mostly at easy level, with only-occasional wheezing pool sprints, hill repeats, or track work.

I forgot to add that as a coach I encourage my guys to train with these tools and learn to relate it to RPE. since I can't see many of them (some I have never met! ) having the extra tools such a HRM, PM, GPS, etc allows me to get a better a deeper insight into their training as I can use their data collected that they send me and break it down to analyze their session beyond the classic: “I ran 30 min and my RPE, pace or my HR avg was ‘x’ ”

Now I can look at a GPS/PM file and see that their pace was lower cuz they ran/rode on hilly terrain and not because they took it easy or they were not feeling good and adjust their training according. OTOH if they ran/rode a flat course and pace was right on target but HR or RPE was higher then something might be going on and I can get to talk to them to figure it out. I can even catch breakthrough sessions or evaluate whether the sessions prescribed are too easy/hard, etc...

Plan on getting tested at Lifetime for max HR etc, and have a HRM on order. But it's all been PE to this point. I think the HRM will help keep my workouts in check as I seem to push to hard at times.

just follow the field test suggested by Mike Ricci on this website and you'll save the $$ and it will be a lot more useful than a Max HR test
