Can someone help me understand something....how do i know what my max heart rate should be while exercising (it gets to normally 175 max)? I'm 27 and have a resting heart rate of 80, Is this good or bad???

Is 80 your resting heartrate when you get up in the morning or just sometime during the day when you are doing very little? I take my heartrate every morning (takes a while to get into this habit) and right now I am around 47-53 pretty much everyday. Additionally I count my heartbeat for a full minute, as this gives a much more accurate picture than doing it for six or ten seconds. This is fine when you want a snapshop during training, but doesn't give very accurate results when resting.

As far as during training, there are several great articles on this site that will give you some insight into heartrates; maximum heart rate, zones, etc. and should answer many of your questions. Try these:

Right now, after drinking coffee and doing some moderate walking around for the past hour, mine is at about 60. Usually the number you usually hear is around 72 for a normal adult.

ONe method of determining your Target heart Rate for training is to start with 220 - your age (27) minis your resting HR multiply by %70- %85 then add back your resting HR - so 220 - 27 = 193 - 80 = 113x .7= 79 + 80 = 159 then x .85 176 - so your range for traing would be 159 - 176 - If you obtain your resting Hr the first thing before you get out of bed you get a more accurate reading-
One other guide would be how long you are able to exercise at this pace - 175 bpm is at your high end and if you can maintain this for your entire workout you must be in fairly good CV condition -

each person may have diff rates, 70 -80 is mornal for most females, athletes will have lower rates, 61 is very good, although some people have naturally big and effcient hearts, see a trainer about a taking a sub-max cardio vascular test - the 3-minute YMCA step test for example - this will give you a better "snapshot" of your level of conditioning

Wow, 80!  I am 54 and have had three or four large cups of coffee and my resting heart rate is still only 64.  How long have you been physically active?

Leona....this is why you are geting headaches and are tired all the time...........you only want to get your HR that high once a week......keep it at around 145-150 for your cardio workouts, if you have to go slow, go slow, you will be a lot lot faster in 6 months at the same HR and you won't suffer headaches all the time.

Is ambient heart rate really meant to be about 72 for a normal adult? Mine (sitting at my desk at work having just eaten a snack) is 48... Should I be worried?!

Unless you are old and in need of a pacemaker the low resting heart rate is a good indication you are fitter than the average joe on the street, it's telling you your heart is having to do less work when your body is at rest due to it's increased strength and capacity.

When I first bought a heart rate monitor I did some research on this and it seems that max heart rates are really variable. I am 35 and my max heart rate is 205 and my resting heart rate is 45. That seemed weird at first but apparently your max heart rate just is what it is. You just have to go out and work really hard and see how high you can get it and the calculate all those percentages from there. I found that the formula = ((MHR – RHR) * P ) + RHR (where p is the percent of max you are shooting for) works well for me. Right around 165 is where I start to breath hard (75% of MHR).

First you have to find out what your max heart rate and resting rate actually are (formulas of any sort are notoriously inaccurate). Check your resting rate when you first wake up in the morning for a few days and average the results. Resting heart rate is a good indicator to tell you if you ar overtraining.

Finding your max is harder and more painful. I reccommend using the ride- up- a- big -hill -as- fast- as -you -can- until- you- almost -puke method. Note: I found about six more beats per minute by using this method in a race with another racer hot on my heels. Max heartrate is a good figure to base pacing numbers upon. Although your lactate threshold heartrate is probably a better figure.

Leona,

You could also start paying attention to your perceived exertion. Try different efforts and after you've been working at that effort for say 5-10 minutes check your HR.  Do this at different times over the course of a week or so.  Then you should have a fairly good idea of what HR you should be working at.

Check out this website.
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/physical/measuring/perceived_exertion.htm

You should be doing most of your workouts in the 11-12 range of perceived exertion.

13 -14 - is hard, you could do it, but you couldn't hold a conversation, and you need to concentrate to keep up the pace.

15 -16 - This is where your breathing start to really change.  You start panting etc.  This effort level could only be kept up for 1/2 hour to one hour.

17 and up - these move up really quickly. Think sprints, all out effort, etc.

Hope this gives you an idea or two.

PS - Working out at a HR of 175 is very high, normally - I'd think you need to bring it down to around 150 for your normal workout zone.
