I've only done one, but here's what I would change.  [No really big mistakes, just tweaks...]

  • Pace faster on swim, bike.
  • Eat a slightly larger (solid) breakfast.
  • Bring a few more gels for the ride.
  • Stop to loan someone a tire lever.
  • Vaseline or more Body Glide under my arms (where the seam of my uniform chafed my skin big time).
  • Buy tubes with longer valve stems.

Getting a massage the day before from a former torture agent of the Chinese government would rank way up there at the tippy top of STUPID, in the triathlon dictionary.

Not putting body glide under my arms and along my sides was an unexpected problem, as I had trained in my LG tri top for four hours, but not six. Guess what happened at six? Really nice friction burns under my arms

I've got my first HIM tomorrow. Hit me, people. I want to hear about the stupidest mistakes you've made in a race of this distance (outside of "Signing up for it", of course)

My first isn't until 10/7, so no stupid mistakes - yet. I just want to wish you good luck!

it's been more than 10-years but I still know why I haven't done another 1/2 since.  Make sure you eat before you get hungry.  I got out of the water and looked and my powerbar and jumped on my bike leaving the power thinking I didn't need it.  Finished the bike pretty strong but knew I was bonking.  Jammed the powerbar in the tranisition and carried another on the run but never could catch up.  Was not a pleasant experience!  Yeah, that was stupid...back then I didn't realize the importance of nutrition and hydration.

I didn't apply sunscreen on a hot sunny day, trusting to the very nice, very enthusiastic but aim-deficient volunteers in transition. The burn was pretty bad.

at some point considering the sponges and water I was dumping over my head my own personal shower. Soaked shoes sloshing around for the last 6 miles when you dont have to was not the best.

1) Like JohnnyKay, I actually paced myself great on the swim and the bike.  This led me to believe that I could hammer the run.  I started out way too fast, and fell apart in the second half.  If you pace yourself well in the first two events, your legs will feel awesome.  Don't fall into this trap.  Continue to go out slow and ease into pace!

2) I was planning on being light on the bike coming in, and I dropped my last handup bottle and didn't want to go back.  I could have used the extra water.   Not huge, but either plan to have a back up strategy with nutrition/hydration or be better at getting the handup bottles.

3) I had to go to the bathroom, and couldn't pull it off on the bike.  Ended up going in the porta potty on the run.  Lost some time, there, but it felt great.  If you can pee on the run/ride, go for it!

I drove 4 hours away to my HIM and forgot my bike shoes and my helmet. Luckly I remembered the bike! I thought I was so prepared, NOT!

You can barley see the MGD in my right hand.

No worries folks!  He's okay!

Heh... I thought I recognized that road rash!

How about "not signing up for it"? I got the opening date for Eagleman 2008 registration wrong and got closed out. Looks like 2009 for me.

jldicarlo - 2007-09-07 10:51 AM Forgot to lube up the underside of my arms with vaseline before the swim. I spent the whole run looking like a chicken trying to take flight....

This is the thread's runner-up to Tracey's fruity fanny in the humor department.

1) Attempting to do my first "live" clip in after T1. Clipped one in the first try and was so shocked I did the zero MPH, slow motion tipover in that direction. No major damage (bloody knee and hand) but did it in front of a nice sized crowd and got tangled up in the bike to boot. Did end up with a big PR that day, go figure.

2) Forgot to pack my sunscreen. 6 hr in the sun can cause far more pain than working out for six hours. Found that a sunburn on the back of your knees and thighs really sucks.
