Subject: tri bike vs road bike for IMKY
So here's the deal. I'm going to finish IMKY on August 31, 2008. The question is what bike am I going to do it on?

I have a Felt F5 that I'm incredibly happy with & it's awesome for Oly's; but, I have had a tri bike on my radar screen for while. Any thoughts? Does a tri bike make a huge difference. I imagine comfort wise it's better & my run would probably be stronger; especially over the IM distance.

Thanks. I'm sure this has been talked about before. Any thoughts would be appreciated. After all, I have to be able to explain (with a straight face) to my much wiser & better half why I need my 3rd new bike in 3 yrs.

I went through this dilema this year and I decided the Tri bike over road bike.  I was considering the triple ring on my road bike but I am glad that I used my tri with double.  There are no climbs that really need the triple small ring. Just make sure you train on roling hills

Unless your racing in the Alps....use a Tri Bike.

I have to agree. Go with the tri bike...hills really aren't that bad.

I did IMKY with a tri bike with a 12-27 rear cassette instead of the typical tri-bike 12-23 rear cassette. I'm a big guy though (252 lbs on race day) and needed the extra climbing power. I figure the 12-27 give me 17% more climbing power. I used every gear I had multiple times on the course. I only walked one hill and that was at about 70 miles and only because my legs were cramping a little. If I didn't have the 12-27, I would have had to walk several hills! But that's just me….your mileage may vary.

Just out of curiousity; how tall are you? I'm at 260 now & am hoping to be down to 230 on race day (sooner hopefully)...I'm 6'4. Did you go w/ a custom frame "fitted" to you or did you buy a "stock" tri bike?

Thanks for the info.

I'm 6'3". I have a standard bike. Well, let me caveat that….I kept breaking spokes with the wheelset that came with the bike so I changed to a little heavier wheel that has more spokes than what came with the bike.

I know this- Yesterday i added aero bars to my road bike and it is an entirely different animal now!!!

average speed went from 18 to 22. and i could get my top speed all the way up to 31. I have an older R600 cannnondale.

Tri bike, aero wheels (disk if you have one) and an aero helmet. The course has 3-4 climbs and the rest are rollers. The first 10 and last 10 are flat and the back half of the LaGrange loop on 42 is very fast also.
