Subject: 50 Mile Training Program

Anyone know of a training plan for a 50 mile run?

I have completed a 50K (last November) and am thinking of doing a 50 mile at the end of March.  That leaves me 5 1/2 months but I don't want to follow a strick regimented training plan for that long.  I just got done training for a HIM so want a little break before started a strick plan.

I would figure starting a training plan at the end of nov/beg of dec and just maintaing fitness till then.

I also want to try to bike/swim some just to mix it up a bit.  I am looking to run 4 day a week probably with a long run on the weekend.  I have looked on the internet but there are limited resources for this distance and most of the plans call for alot of days/miles.

I overtrained (ie got injured before hand) for my 50K and am worried about doing the same thing here.

Thanks

Haven't gone through this plan in detail but it looks like it might fit your needs:

Google Ultramarathon Training.  There are lots of training plans. Choose the one that's right for you.

Maybe see if Birkierunner has some info for you.  He's doing a 50-miler in less than 2 weeks.

Trixie is a good person to ask.  She runs a lot of ultras!

I've done a few ultras.
I looked at Hal Higdon's plan and it looks pretty much like what I would have suggested.

I didn't use a plan for my first 50 but I did a few marathons a few weeks apart and kept up w/long runs leading up to it. I didn't have any injuries to work around so I don't know what I'd have done if I did...

One thing I did was try to double up some days or do back-to-back workouts...

ie - long run (20+) in the AM then a for fun mtn bike in the afternoon (although 'for fun' with my husband means it was sorta hard for me)
Then maybe a fun run (ok, Hash) the next day.

I think it helped with recovery and making my legs stronger, plus just helped push the mental limits of 'tired'.

I'm not really following a training plan...just gradually ramping up mileage after IM WI last month.  A lot of good info is in the book "A step beyond: a definitive guide to ultrarunning   http://www.ultrarunning.com/ultra/merchandise/a-step-beyonda-definitive.shtml

It doesn't contain training plans like you're looking for but has tons of practical advice, strategies, etc.  Order from the ultrarunning link...its a lot cheaper than amazon.com  Good luck.
