K so I filled out a registration form and sent money to my first upcoming tri. Do they send you confirmation info, race info, anything or do you just assume that it is all good and you will get details at some point before the race when you arrive? I know this is really open ended and many are run differently, but any standard kind of protocol?

If they cash your check, that's a pretty good sign.

What triathlon did you sign up for?  Try looking for online, all races I have been in were on the web, where the times, date, routes, prizes, etc were given.  Registration was also online with instant confirmation that you can print out for your records.

I've signed up through the mail for a few running races.  They have all sent me a confirmation email, so I knew I was in.  I also show up on the list of participants.

Here's a tip: I have always taken my confirming email with me to packet pick-up; "just in case".

I've never had a problem until my second-to-last race this year. For some reason I wasn't in the data base and did not have a packet even though I had paid. My confirming email plus an injured athlete who turned his packet back in, got me into the race. It could have gotten nasty.

Generally, it is rarely a problem, but just like race-day itself; anything can happen.

It is better to be prepared, than sorry.
