Subject: How much for ankle surgery?
After months of pain in my ankle (and doing two HIMs on it), I finally went to a Sports Med Clinic and was tentatively diagnosed with bone chips in my ankle. I've already scheduled an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon for after the first of the year, when my deductible resets.

Assuming I do need surgery, what should I expect (type of surgery, recovery period, etc.) and what's a ballpark figure that it would cost? I would like to set aside money in my flex spending account earmarked just for that. Thanks!

How did they make the diagnosis?  Did something show on x-ray?  The reason I ask I've been nursing a sprained ankle since June.  My family med doc said I have a positive drawer test and scheduled a consult with the sports med doc.  I'm wondering if I would benefit from surgery as well.  The little bit of reading I did seemed to indicate in worst case scenarios they can go in and move the ligaments around to provide better support.  The outcomes seemed pretty good.

I haven't had pictures done yet-- that's the first thing the orthopedic guy will do, even before he sees me. The diagnosis was done by a Sports PT based on where I'm having pain (top front of my ankle) and after she put me through some drills. I'm interested to learn more about what you've found out about moving the ligaments around as I've been told mine are "completely shot". I kind of knew that already, based on how many times I rolled my ankles back in my competitive volleyball days.

1-Go see the orthopedist
2-Ask if you have ankle instability
3-If the think you do ask for stress xrays
4-an MRI will most likely not be as helpful as stress radiographs however an MRI may help with thebone chips and perhaps to see where they came from but may opr may not be needed.  Let the doc decide
5-If you have painful loose bodies in your ankle get scoped and get them out
6-If you ahve painful loose bodies and instability getit fixed
7-Down time from an ankle arthroscopy is a lot less than instability surgery
8-Ankle scope alone you will probab;y be up and at em in 6 weeks
9-instability it will be more like 3 months
10-I have no ide ahow much it costs.  I write a code on a piece of paper.  When you go to see the DR.  ask them.  It vaires from state to state anyway
11-The charge for the hospital/surgery center will be WAY MORE than the surgeons fee

I think you left out about five 'WAYs.' It was so shocking that I just started laughing. If I didn't have insurance, I would have been weeping.

Also my ankle instability pts are some of my happiest pts.  Once you are stable and all your pain goes away after years of feeling like you are crazy because your ankle sprain didn't get better.

Call the Ortho office and ask to speak to their billing person. They should be able to help estimate the cost for various procedures.

You are lucky we put in the max of $5K a year into our flexible spending account and run out of flex spend by October as our traditional insurance sucks and we are a family of 7.
