Subject: HED 3 Carbon vs Aluminum
Christmas is almost here and I need some help deciding which HED 3's to get.  Carbon or Aluminum.  The weight difference:  1500g Carbon - 1790 Alum.  The price is the same, the weight difference is slight.  Does one last longer than the other?  Need some info if you got it.  Thanks.

Just one consideration is that you will have to have special brake pads for the carbon wheels. If you're going to train on aluminum wheels and race on the carbon ones, you will have to have two sets of brake pads. Not as easy as just changing out the wheels.

0.7 pounds ..... most people would kill to knock that off their bike ...... so while it may seem slight, it really is pretty significant for a pair of things on a bike ......

And are the carbon ones clinchers???  I was not aware that Hed made carbon clinchers.  My guess is that is the weight for their tubular wheels vs. the clincher ones.

More of a consideration than the brake pad issues.

Not if you run the Zipp pads .... they work fine for both ......

May work fine for both but you may not want to alternate on the same set of pads. I've heard running any pads on aluminum wheels will pick up particles that will in turn score the carbon wheels.

When I got mine last summer I went with Alluminum because they were clinchers.  At the time you could only get tubulars with the carbons.  I am a pretty big guy so it was an easy decision to go with aluminums instead.  Very happy with them.

I'm a very little guy and I'm thrilled with mine.  I also wanted clinchers.  I'm very surprised at a .7 pound difference considering the wheels are carbon except for the rims.  A little strip for the tire to mount on can weigh .7 pounds?

290 grams is quite a bit ...... it is the aluminum and the bonding needed to get the rim to stay on the wheel.  But people like the idea of clinchers to be able to change a flat without having to carry a whole different tire.  Google clincher vs. tubular and read up on it.

Having just downed a couple of pounds of Thanksgiving turkey/stuffing/mashed taters/veggies/couple glasses of wine (with pie & more wine yet to come), I'm not stressing out over a few grams at this point.

BTW, I like my aluminum HED.3 clinchers.  Easy to swap back and forth.  And they're actually heavier than my "everyday" Shimano RH550's.

I use same brake pads on my training and carbon wheel set and was told by a number of bike guys in the know that it was okay with the right brake pads.

I use the yellow swiss stop pads. I just check the brakes before putting on my carbon race wheels.

Sue7013 just got some HED3's a few months ago..I think they are carbon with alumunium rims so she can use regular brake pads and they are clinchers.

I was comparing tubular v tubular...clinchers are an additional 60g

They make an aluminum rimmed tubular??  That seems counter-productive .....

Go carbon, hands down.

Kathy, sorry to tell you but you are killing your nice carbon wheels... You can use the same type of brake pads on both carbon and aluminum rims, just not the same pair of pads.

No matter how much you try to clean the pads after using them on aluminum rims, you simply can't get all the microscopic aluminum particles out, effectively creating a nice abrasive pad, which is deteriorating the carbon brake surface.

Back to the HED3 carbon versus aluminum. It really comes down to if you want clinchers or tubbies and if you race frequently in rainy conditions. If you're looking for clinchers, al. is your choice, if tubbies, then go carbon. Regarding rain... braking carbon wheels in rainy conditions can be quite interesting...

I'm on three or four year old carbon clinchers..I believe they went to tubular only for carbon after I got mine. Durability-wise, it's a non-issue. I've never had to think about these wheels since I bought them.

On that note.. HED only makes good stuff, so reliability either way shouldn't be an issue.

I couldn't be more happy with either my HED aerobars, my HED Jet 50's or my HED Alps.... I do like HED just because they just WORK.
