I've been waiting for someone to revive this thread so I can talk about myself

This thread inspired me to try pullups and now after a few weeks of trying, I can do 2 sets of 2 chinups.  My first attempt, I was able to do 1.  Barely.  I haven't tried an actual pullup, but this is the best way I can get up there, and chinups are still pretty badass as far as I'm concerned.

I think its awesome all the women trying to do them. I think any excercise the you lift your own body weight is a great excercies and practical. (Pushups, Dips, Pullps, ect...)

For women and men both the number of pullups you can do with go hand in had with how many you've been doing recently. The Army had us doing them 5 days a week to finish PT and a few of the girls were up to 9 or 10 after a few months. The Key is the Every Day part so keep it up.

*Just a note on helping people do them... Have the person helping you hold you at the waist. They can still lift a little but its a lot safer if you happen to lose your grip on the bar. If you lose your grip and they are holding your shins you are much more likely to fall head first. If they are holding your waist you'll come down on your feet.

That's awesome girl!!  Soon you will be doing sets of 10, I can see it now.

I just ordered some woody bands (thanks for that link kimj81) and have started doing simplefit workouts (see the thread on simplefit - it's....well, simple and good for someone with no equipment or gym, and is a bit freaked out by crossfit).  It's quick and it's awesome, all bodyweight resistance training, and you need nothing more than a door pullup bar (and bands if you can't do pullups).

I can do 3 sets of 3 full pull-ups.  I love bodyweight exercises.  My strength training right now consists of only bodyweight exercises.  (All I have time for!)  Full body pushups, pullups, and squats/lunges/step-ups.  Geez, they are effective and kick my butt nicely.    Glad to see so many of us doing pull-ups.  You all are inspirational!  Keep up the good work!!!

Do any of you do kipping pull ups?

I have been using assisted pull up machine and have lowered my offset weight about 25 pounds in 2 months. I wonder how much weight off I would need to get down to, to try doing kipping ones. Geez I've never seen anyone do them in my Y. Only guys do regular pull ups that I have ever seen. Just wondering if it helped you guys.

When I used to use the assisted pullup machine, I found that no matter how little weight I got to, it still didn't seem to help me with unassisted pullups...there are so many stabilizer muscles needed that don't get activated on a pullup machine.

Since doing 1-3 reps of an exercise isn't real satisfying or productive for building strength (mabye for bulk though), I think it's much better to simply use a bar and a chair. I put the chair in front of me, rest the soles of my feet on it's edge and just do 10 reps. I find that i naturally adapt the amount of assistance I provide with my legs so that at the end of 10 reps I'm spent. I fyou are spent at 5 reps, just give a little more push with your legs to get to 10 (or 8 or 12).

The point is that the best training for pullups is pullups taht engage all the supporting muscle groups.

Good work on your progress so far, but if you stall out on the assisted machine, don't be afraid to just pull a chair up to the pullup bar and go for it.

i am still working on doing pullups using a door gym and woody bands, and i've moved from the big band to the middle band now.

i noticed yesterday though, that my right tricep seems huger than i ever remember, but my left is still the same as it's always been.  a distinct difference between the two.  my guess is i compensate somehow and just rely on my right side more.  has this happened to any of you, and what did you do about it?

(sorry KathyG, i have not tried kipping pullups and can't help with your question.  but i agree with adventureBear, i am surprised at how much my core comes into play when i am doing pullups).

You can try a pullup variation where you throw a small towel over the bar and grasp the ends with one hand, the other is on the bar, so you are "offset" and forcing each arm to work more idnependantly. Figure out which side is harder for you and do a few extra reps or an extra set on that side.

Right now, I can only do a few. I used to be able to do about 15 when I was in the Army...but I also used to be able to do about 60 pushups. Now I can only do about 15 before I need to take a break. :-(

This sounds like a good goal for me to work on improving!

I have not yet accomplished a full, unassisted pull-up. I always keep it as an off-season goal.

Trixie's video is pretty inspiring and the practical tips from Kathy, Lisa, Suzanne/AdventureBear, and Climber/Kansas guy about getting assistance (or not!) are really valuable.

I'll keep trying...at 6'0" and nearly 170 it's tough, but my 6'1" 175 boyfriend does them almost daily in our living room. I want to be able to join him for a set or two! But first, just one...

Cheers, -Sunny

What an awesome thread! Used to be able to do 10 pull-ups (palms facing away) when I was rock-climbing a bunch. Haven't climbed in over 5 years.

Recently trying them at the gym, I can do 3...then have to rest, then 3 more. I can, however, do 8 chin-ups (palms facing me)...which is exciting.

I am going to keep trying the pull ups and try to get back to 10. They are sooo hard now. That would be very satisfying!

Keep it up, women of BT rock!

I LOVE this topic.  Pull ups and dips are my two favorite exercises in the world.  I can do multiple sets of both at all different hand positions depending on desired area of focus.  I saw someone earlier suggest the rubberband in place of the assisted pull up machine.  I whole heartedly agree with this.  The Rubberbands or resistance bands still force you to control your body, while the assisted machine does not.  I would also suggest doing hanging dips(not bench dips) whenever possible as part of your daily routine.  If you can not do one, use the rubber bands.  Some people are self conscious about it because they think they look funny or wimpy.  Get over it if you do.  I can do 5 sets of 10 w/o bands, but when I get into 3 sets of 40 I always use the bands.  Can't live w/o them.  Love em, ain't gonna give em up!!!!

Bumping this thread for a very self-promoting reason.

I DID MY FIRST PULL UP TODAY! (actually 2!!!!)

Hands were facing towards me, so I'm not sure if that is a "real" pull up, but it is good enough for me.

Just wanted to say...my arms have always been like 2 worthless noodles hanging off my shoulders, but for about 6 months now I've really just set a couple goals for myself and focused. I do push ups (on toes at first, go to knees when fatigued). 2 sets of 25. I also do a combo of planks, regular and side. And finally some sets of decline sit ups. Core strength seems to have really made a diff in overall upper body strength.

Isn't it awesome to do your first pullup? It takes a lot of time and practice! I can do 3, rest, then 3 again now but I still remember the day when I was able to do my first one from hanging. Yay!

So true.  With the assisted pullup machine, you're more likely to hit a certain amount of assistance and get stuck there without being able to take it all the way down to zero.  A better way to train yourself is to use a spotter.  You can be in the appropriate position for an unassisted pullup and your spotter should only be there as somewhat of a platform from which to push off.

My new year's resolution was to learn to do pull ups. Wide grip, hands facing away from me I can squeak out 2. Hands facing in, probably 3 or 4, close grip, hands facing in or hands facing each other I can do about 6.Brilliant me has made it progressively harder by gaining about 12 pounds since January too! LOL!

KathyG-That's hilarious, I've had those dreams, too!  I used to have to do pull-ups to pass the PT test to be on a fire crew, and so there was always some stress about it.  I could do them, but not nearly as many as I could in my dreams, where they were effortless!

When I was climbing twice a week last winter I was able to do about 4 pullups with my hands facing away from me.  I've never tried pullups with my hands facing me.  Now I can do maybe 2 hands-away pullups if I'm not already tired from other upper body workouts, barely 1 if I'm tired.

Right now, no.

Back in my cadet days?  Yes.  Seven absolutely legit arms fully locked out to chin over the bar pullups.

Weight/body comp doesn't really matter that much.  Even as a cadet I was pretty "stout" and it didn't matter.  I was easily 20-30 pounds heavier than some chicks that could barely pull off one.  It was definitely more about strength.

I didn't read all the posts, but the folks who were talking about supporting some of your weight on something else were SPOT ON.  The assisted machines are okay, but they won't prep you as fast as just supporting some weight.  For example, you can have a buddy hold your feet (you bend your legs at the knee with your feet behind you).  That way you can use a little leg strength to help out.  I think the difference here is like free weights vs. machines...with the machine you are constrained to the motion of the machine and don't work all the necessary muscles.  If someone is just holding your feet you are still using all the associated pull up muscles.

Not sure if that made sense, but I know when I had to learn to do pullups to even get into the Academy I put my feet up on something to take some of the weight off and it REALLY helped.
