I used to be able to...bunches of them...until I broke my back in 2002. I had to have reconstructive surgery on the vertebrea directly behind my diaphram and in order to get to the damaged vertebrea, they had to remove one of my ribs. Now, I fear doing them...too much scar tissue pulling on muscle. Hopefully one day when I get back down to my fighting weight I'll give them a try again.

Comet - 2009-12-01 3:29 PM Kathy,

I can do lots! Thanks to CrossFit. I worked on them every day I went to a session and quickly (like a week or 2) progressed to being able to do 1-2 without a band.

Now, I'll never use a band. My favorite is "Helen" with the 3 rounds of 12 pullups. I've even managed to add it to 5 rounds!

Good luck!

Awesome Comet...   and yes women can do pullups...  Crossfit is definitly an amazing thing..

I couldn't do 5 pullups when I started Crossfit,   now my max  nonstop is 28.  My goal this year is to get to 50 nonstop and I am creating a little video of the journey that I HOPE to share when Iam able to get to 50..    and perhaps 100..

My goal is to do a pull-up and am working with Jon Hinds, owner of the Monkey Bar Gym - He invented amazing equipment that allows anyone to progress from whatever condition you are at and improve! I'm using the Jungle Gym to help me gain the stabilization and strength - I can almost do a full pull-up!!! (Hopefully I will be posting again soon that I can do not only one but several pull ups!!)

For inspiration and exercise routines check out Monkey Bar Gym!

Typically women (even those of us that strength train) need to incorporate a balance between pulling and pushing exercises for our upper body - work on those rows ladies!

Rows are a great substitute for pull-ups, but are not a pushing exercise. Good pushing exercises include overhead press, bench press or push-ups, dips or tricep extensions.

Though your point is a good one - you don't want to create muscular imbalances by only doing pulling exercises!

the maximum that i have done so far is 5. I want to be able to do 10 in a row, thats my goal. Doing pullups makes me feel strong. Some days I can do more than others, I dont understand that. :-/
