Subject: Women can you do pull ups?

I was wondering if many women can do pull ups?

It took me 6 months of working on doing push ups so I could do3 sets of 10 regular men type push ups. I thought doing pull ups may be a fun goal to work towards this off season. The trainers at my Y said they are on of the hardest things to do and if you are like me with high lean body mass for my size it is even more challenging.  They Y has an assisted pull up machine that you can adjust the weight based on your own weight..only could do 50 pounds today but just was goofing around.

I'm a guy and I'm still working on doing a pull up. For those who don't have access to an assisted pull up machine you can buy a big rubber band from either JumpStretch or Iron Woody. Loop the band over the pull up bar and stick your foot in the band. Works very well.

Nope. I can hang for a little bit, but I can't actually just pull myself up.

I have been doing cross-fit this year after my last Tri.  My main goal is to be able to do a real pull up.  Now I can only do 10 or so with the assist of the machine at the gym.  None without the machine help. So I'll be so excited if when I can do one with out the help.

Nope.  Right now I have a hard time doing regular pushups, so I'm working on that right now.  I would love to be able to do that - it's been one of my secret long-term goals for awhile.

Well, I'm not even sure of the proper way to do a pull up. At first I thought you were supposed to hang with your arms straight and feet off the ground before starting to pull up. Those I can't do. Then I saw one of the Crossfit videos and they jump a little first to pull up and kind of swing to use the momentum. If I do a little jump from the ground first then I can do 1 pull up. I've been trying this at the park each time my husband and I run there and for the past few weeks I couldn't do any pull ups. So I was happy to get to 1. But I'm not sure if this is the right way.

I can do about 2 and that's it. I still have childhood trauma of my PE teacher giving me (and every other girl in the class) a failing mark because I couldn't do it.

My FAVORITE thing about the CrossFit affiliate that I visited recently was a list written on the whiteboard at the end of the room:  "Women's Pull-Up List (consecutive)" - beneath that was a list of women's names, each with a number after it, ranging from 1 to 15.

I plan to start doing CrossFit regularly come January, with an eye to making that list.

Well, one magical day I did 3, just like that. Then I went and did some other exercises, came back and did 3 more. But on any given day, I can do one at a time several times. It doesn't really matter which way my hands face (but ONLY BECAUSE I trained both ways! Underhand used to be easier.)

The key for me was doing some EVERY workout. If my workout (I crossfit) required a lot of pullups, I did jumping pullups. If it didn't call for any, I did lots of slow negatives (lower yourself down) in my warmup.

wide grip I think I got one.

Well I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that has this goal.  At the Y I was told lots of guys aren't able to do them either.

It feels so good to work hard to do something new and then finally you get it. When I worked on push ups first on my knees, then a bench, then a smith machine getting closer and closer to the floor. Then I could do one, in a couple weeks sets of 10. I find it fascinating to see how quickly I gain strength when I work on stuff. I'm my own little science experiment.

Another issue I struggle with at times, is the weights I can lift doing different things doing the strength things isn't the issue, but my hands are the weak point. Where I train most women only use really light weights. As your strength increases to keep challenging yourself you need to up the weight or the reps.

HAAAA! I have said that if I were hanging by my hands over the edge of a bridge whereby if I fell I'd fall 500 feet into hot lava (think movie scenes)---that I'd likely plunge into the lava long before I had the strength to pull myself up onto the bridge. I just CAN NOT pull myslef up. I can't really even do that hanging below monkey bar thing where you traverse using your hands while your legs dangle.

Guess I'd better look into that assisted pull up machine myself just in case I ever get to Kona and cross a bridge going over lava! HA!

Ok, well, I am not a woman, but I thought I would say that I can do nine. I've worked on it for a long time - and I'm still trying to get to ten. When I started I could do two pull ups. I switched from doing lat pulldowns to pull ups and for sure it is a completely different exercise if you do not pay attention. The assisted pull up machine really hurts my forearms so I stopped performing that exercise. I found that when I used the lat pulldown machine I tended go too fast and did not hold the bar down long enough too "simulate" a pull up. I now do one set up pull ups and use the Nitro lat pulldown machine in a very controlled slow fashion at ten pounds over my body weight (as indicated, I can never tell with these machines) for another three sets. On my last pull up I hang in a controlled manner and come down in fifteen seconds to get used to weight.

Good luck to all. It's a great exercise.

Guy here, at my lightest weight, when I started college I could do three. Over the summer I was up to 1 at a time but able to do many over the course of an hour with other work in between. Right now I am back to none.

Just keep working on it. I find when I can't do them, if I spend a week consistently trying (any time I go out to the garage), even if that means jumping and slowly letting myself down I get back to being able to do them. I'm going to give it another month or two before trying them again since my latest incident with the ground.

Right now....nope =)

At my best about 2.5 years ago, I could do several sets of 4 (palms facing away from me).  Of course at that point I was rowing, so I was spending several hours a day pulling on an oar.

Those of us on the team who couldn't do pull ups (myself included, at times) did let-downs.  Either jump up or use a step to get to the top of pull up position, then slowly lower yourself down to hanging.  We used to aim for 10 seconds or so, but it's pretty tough to keep it controlled.  It's a different motion than normal pull ups, but I think it helped me get strong enough to do regular ones.

Ahh, how I miss my days of upper body strength...

Yes, I can, but I quit doing them last year.  I pulled some little something in my wrist and decided it wasn't worth it. It took forever to heal.  We used to have a pull up contest about once year in my husbands family.  I won one year doing 10 which should tell you alot about the men!

The real key is underhand or overhand? OH is far harder IMO.

At my strongest I could do seven pullups.

I started the winter trying to do pull ups to help my rock climbing. After a winter of going to the rock climbing gym 2-3 x per week (and not doing pullups), I could do seven by the end of the winter.

Right now I can almost do one several times, I'm about 20 lbs heavier than back then. I'd like to she the weight and be able to do more pullups again!

Have my clients working on them so they are making me do them too   We train at a park, so one client holds the other's shins (knees bent) and assists with the lift.  You can also jump up then slowly lower yourself down to build your strength...Currently I am doing 3 X 5 pullups, the first one or two of each set being a full pull up (but I do put my feet down in between for a sec)...the last ones I currently take a tiny hop.  In less than 2 weeks we've all seen strength gains! I *heart* bodyweight exercises.

Being able to do one is a secret goal I've harbored for a while too, like KathyG.  But I haven't been doing anything about it.  Partially because I dn't have a gym and thus have no access to an assisted machine, and don't really know how else to practice.  (tips?  first - I need to be able to do real pushups again, but alongside that?)

When I was 13, weighed 100lbs, and could do ~50 flat as a board nose touch the ground pushups without much problem, I still couldn't do a pullup.  I have never done one in my life

I use the exposed beams in my garage. I wear an old pear of riding gloves to avoid splinters.

And you can do like Mikethebear suggested and get a peice of bigarse rubber band to stand on as an assist.

You know how you are doing those push ups on the smith machine...well, flip around, back is facing the floor, chest is facing the ceiling. Do body weight rows!

Practice those often, along with your push ups.  Use the assisted pull up machine in the mean time, and every once in a while, walk over to the bar and see if you can pull yourself up.
