Subject: Wobbly

Okay, so I've finally been able to get out on the real road with my tri-bike.  I did stationary bike before I could do road bike, and have done some neighborhood training, and a lot of trainer rides recently, and finally had the guts and weather to get outside.  I really enjoy it, have joined the fallen while completely stationary and one foot clipped in club, but I have one problem (besides not enought time in the saddle) that I'm wondering if anyone has any good tips or training suggestions to help me out.  When I get going fast (which equals 24 mph at this point, downhill of course) OR when I reach back to get a water bottle, and then when I try to drink, and then when I try to put it back.  Also, sometimes after I've been aero for a little bit, I get wobbly too, scarily so (especially prominent when there are big vehicles going by at 50-60mph.

Suggestions welcome por favor!

Just ride more, next thing you know you'll be drinking going 40mph and not think twice about it.

Im going to say that it doesnt sound mechanical and it seems to be just getting the hang of riding outdoors more. When grabbing the bottle, or doing anything else that changes your train of thought Im guessing you wobble bc for a split second you dont pay attention to the road. IMHO its just a atter of being comfortable on the bike. Practice riding more and doing these things and you will become better balanced. Triathletes are notorious for going over 5 kanes when grabbing for a water bottle.

As for speed wobble when you are going fast, again it takes practice to be good at going fast. One trick though is too have your pedals at 3 and 9 o'clock amd squeeze the top tube with your knees. It will help stabalize the bike and make you more aero. Bottom line is Practice.

ride some rollers, they will curb any balance issues.

Practice riding around your neighborhood at low speeds, and grabbing your water bottle without taking your eyes off the road. Don't look for the bottle just reach down and practice grabbing it and putting it back without looking down.

I would also recommend buying a 15 dollar aero bottle and putting it between your aero bars. They have a long plastic straw, and you can just bend down and drink without having to grab for a bottle on your frame.

I had the same issues when I first got my road bike. They will disappear, however two things helped me when I reach for the water bottle. First, I looked far ahead at the horizon and second, I took my time to s l o w l y feel for it. If I rushed, I'd tense up and wobble or look down.

You don't even need to take out your water bottle all the time to practice steering one-handed. Just reach to it, or anywhere else for a stretch, even just shake out your hand and arm, all the while focusing on holding a steady line. It's not necessary but I like to practice with either hand for variety.

Once you're getting good, for a humbling experience, try doing this on rollers.
