I recently added this as a new long term goal. I can't do one now, much less a set of 10. I know that I need to do more regular push ups. And I plan to do that based on kimj81's rec.

My question is this, once I can knock out a ton of regular push ups, how to I start to morph that into one armed push ups. Is there a particular form I need to use. Should I keep pulling my arms in closer together until they are right up on each other?

What's the progression?

Oooooh, cool question/goal. I've never thought about that before. I know you have to put your feet wide. I think you should work on some diamond pushups (put your hands together to make a diamond). But other than that, I think I would work on a progression similar to what you would do just to work up to real pushups. Start on the wall, then move to a counter/stairs. Try it from your knees and so on. Be sure to work on both arms so you don't end up all wonky.

I'm going to have try this too! Sounds fun!

I'm going to try them tonight. I leave in 10 minutes to go strength train. I'll see if I can do one...

I think it would be cool to do them. I wonder if that is harder than lifting one foot up and doing them.

Diamond shape...hands together, shoulder are the wide part? then feet together?

Back in the spring doing my sets of push ups were easy and not hard so I asked my coach for options to make them tougher...elevate your feet on a bench or hold onto an upside down I think it is called bosu thing...wobbly and hard.

No way can I do one. I couldn't even figure out how to balance my body doing one with my knees down. I can do regular push ups with one foot lifted though.

I need to watch someone do them or see how to do it better..but I think I'd need to be way stronger than I am.

All I know is that you have to have a really wide stance with your feet. I would try one right now, but my arms are toast after my workout tonight!

BTW: How cool is it that a bunch of girls are sitting around talking about 1-arm pushups!?

One day when you have some free time go into a book store and sit and read Pavel Tsatsouline's "Naked Warrior." He has an in-depth discussion on doing one-armed push ups. There's definitely a technique to it. I read the book once a while ago. I think one of his tips is to spread your legs far apart to get a triangular base.

Doing lots of regular push ups will certainly help, but the one-armed version is a different animal given the balance issues. Basically, to get better at one-armed push ups, you need to train the movement. You do that by doing easier versions of one-armed push ups. For instance, start by doing one-armed push ups against a wall, then against a bench, then against a lower bench, then finally on the floor.

Here's a pic of me doing one-armers... I don't know if it's the "proper form," but that's how I do it!
And when I was learning how to do them, I started by doing ALOT of them up against a wall. It definately helped.

I can do about 5 1arm, but except for the wide feet stance never thought about the form.  WIDE feet better balance.

Very cool, Thanks!! Ever since I saw Jillian do them on the intro to Biggest Loser, I've wanted to be able to do them. They look so bad a--!!

Plus, since I need to strengthen my upper body anyway, I figure it's a good goal.

I hadn't thought much about 1-arms until my niece from Hawaii ask me for some exercise advice and for some reason asked me if I could do 1-arms.  So I do a few 1's and handstand pushups just to make sure I can still do them.  Not bad for a 51 yo man...

wow...i thought i was good because i can easily do 3 sets of 10 "man" push-ups.

i'll have to try to 1 armed ones...i know i can't, but's it's fun to try. i know my next progression is one legged...you can even do them on the bosu ball, that makes it a bit tougher!

On the subject of pushups... anybody ever done three-man pushups?
That's an exercise in team work

Couldn't even find an example of 3 man PU.  Found a 4 man PU though.

Ahh. Well you have three people in the leaning rest position in the shape of a triangle, with each person's feet on the lower back of the person by their feet. When they pushup, the entire group is supported by the three people's arms only.

In the magazine Maximum Fitness I saw a workout that had a SPIDERMAN PUSHUP.  This video shows a modified version, but you can imagine the same thing done from the toes.

Could be something to work for also.

Perhaps work on doing T-Pushups too:

I tried out the spiderman pushup (not the modified variation) and it feels like it does a good job or targeting one arm more than the other at a time. Could help to improve your one-arm pushup.

I'll up you that: try doing that push up while gripping kettle bells- So your hands have to grip and balance on the KB, and then when you do the rotation, you also have to lift the KB.

(Not that I can do it, but I know this guy....

Good stuff!!! I will have to try it all. Right now I am focusing on being able to do multiple sets of regular push ups. Maybe can start integrating some of these others in a few months. Baby steps.
