Kido - 2010-02-16 12:37 AM I was really digging on the boarder cross.  Both the prelim time trials to establish position and the actual races themselves.

Men's downhill coverage seemed remarkably short and sort of boring, actually.  I was hoping for more...

Yeah I was hoping for more coverage of the downhill than just the three medal runs, an american, a favorite and a crash too.  Hopefully Universal Sports will replay the race in it's entirety later on at some point.  I'm really looking forward to the women's downhill tomorrow.  Lindsey Vonn didn't have a great training run (came in 20th) but we'll see if she's just playing mind games with the rest of the field.

If you like the boarder cross just wait until the skier cross, it's faster and has bigger air, not to mention they're carrying poles in their hands!  I love the olympics, I busted out my jacket from when I worked the Salt Lake games, even though its a bit musty...

I caught a bunch of the downhill streaming live online.  The commentary was in Italian but I was happy I got to see it.  I'm really surprised it wasn't well covered.

Taking the day off work tomorrow to head over to Vancouver with my wife.  I only live a ferry ride away from Van so we figured we might as well go and check out the pavilions and be in all that positive energy .  Can't wait to check it out.

So do I!  Fortunately it is slow at work the next few weeks.  I work with the military and all resources are pretty focused on security at the games.

I've been watching the Women's Hockey.  Seen 3 of the 6 prelim games so far.  Looking forward to USA - Russia today.  Watching the opening ceremonies now.

Great Goal by Jocelyne Lamoureux for Team USA.

They even announced before the coverage, that they were going to the men's downhill, the "Flagship event" of the winter games.  And THEN only show 4 - 5 runs?  Weird.

Backtracking a bit to the opening cerimony...

I'm not a KD Lang fan in any way, but her version of Hallelujah was REALLY good, IMO.  One of the hilights of what I thought was and average at best opening.

Maybe China set the bar impossibly high?  Not hard to do spending 400 million...

Ever since seeing the Chinese opening ceremonies, the Canadians knew they weren't going to compete with that. But I liked our opening ceremonies. They seemed very Canadian to me, so I think that's what we were trying to express. But you are right, k.d. lang was awesome.

Day 4, I went to the French Quarter at Granville Island. It was with good company, but it's definitely not as fun there as it is downtown. We ate Quebecois meals, poutine, tortiere, etc. at a makeshift lounge and though the food was good, it was overpriced and the service was really bad. We also listened to a famous Quebec french singer (Garou who also sang at the opening ceremonies), but it's not really my type of music, so I didn't enjoy it as much as other bands that I've seen.

Oh, and in the beer garden, there was a brief appearance by Jean Chretien.

Hey Jen.  What do you suggest as the best places to check out downtown?

If you can see the group Naturally 7 peform at the Bell Ice Cube, I highly recommend them. They sing acapella, but they make all the instrument sounds too. We were pleasantly surprised.

The German house (tent next to Steamworks) and the Irish House (tent next to Doulin's) are really popular, but they really are just beer gardens, so if you don't want to stand in too many queue's you can safely skip them.

Definitely go and see the light show nightly at Robson Square. It's free, and the view is great standing anywhere in Robson Square. We were standing on Robson Street and it couldn't have been better.

There's live street performers and some are quite good, but I'm sure that you see that a lot in Victoria.

If you walk over the Burrard Street bridge, you'll get a good view of the spot lights (that can be programmed on the web) over English Bay and Kits.

In Yaletown (I think on Mainland Street), there are tents set up with constantly changing performances, there were some street dancers last time I went by, so walk by there too.

If you are only in Vancouver for one day, I wouldn't stand in too many lines because you can have a lot of fun just walking down the street and taking in the atmosphere. Maybe Jeni (KrazyLegs) will chime in too. She's been visiting a lot of things too.

I was in Event Services at Snowbasin and also worked the opening and closing.  Yeah, it was an incredible experience, huh?  I was there for the Paralympics too and those guys are just as amazing.

Just saw who won on MSN.  Glad and angry at the same time...  Glad she won.  Angry of what now seems even MORE was the over hype that last 3 weeks...

Something tells me is was sort of a scam and publicity stunt...  I could be wrong.

Women's Downhill Rocked.  The announcer on CTV kept saying the course was sick and other great expressions.   The final jump was awesome unless you had too much speed an lost control.
