On a more serious note: Hope everyone's doing well with their training (okay...sounds like mixie's a little freaked, but that will pass). Personally, I've completely abandoned all time goals after a really crappy first-ever 60 mile ride (with hill at 40, just like Vineman course) last Sunday. Last big brick this Sunday...last chance to really convince myself I suck before taper begins. Woo-hoo!

I have a question for the vets, too: We'll have friends driving up early on race morning from the San Jose area. What's parking going to be like in Guerneville for people who don't have a hotel to leave their car at? Are my friends going to be circling around looking for some place to land at 6:30am?

I did this race last year, as for parking it's a small town, so I always err on the side of "give myself more time than I think I'll need rather than rushing".  I stayed in Santa Rose and no traffic that early in the morning.  I was there fairly early last year and walked about 3/4 mile to the river from our parking spot.  Keep in mind the race area is small for the amount of people that are there, body-marking lines were long and you need to be marked before you put your bike in transition.  I gave myself more time than I thought I needed, but I still had to ask people if I could cut the porta-potty line in order to get in my wave on time.

Make sure you are in the right gear coming out of T1, there is a small incline.  I gave up on a time goal at the end of my bike ride, check out my RR for more info there.  Hydrate and be prepared for warm weather.  The sprinkler at the run turnaround rocks!

Someone asked about wetsuits.  I did the practice swims leading up to race day and found myself too warm in a sleeveless and just swam in a tri-suit.   Have fun out there and good luck!

tcovert - 2008-06-19 4:08 PM Personally, I've completely abandoned all time goals

yeah, I let go of that a looooooooong time ago.

current goal

Execute race/nutrition plan....thats so pathetic

I feel like the most unfit, out of shape fatazz to walk the face of the planet. However, I am able to fake it well (see avatar)

It dosent help that NOW of all times work is getting very stressful...I'm trying to transfer to a new office. It will be much better in the long run for me for a million reasons. I wish I could deal with the logistics some other time but it's now or never. UGH! And part of my roof SLID off my house.

Put aero bars on my bike today, but it's way too hot to ride. Will try them out tomorrow hopefully I wont die.

It's the little victories...You're adding aerobars...yay! Excellent decision...enjoy!

Me, OTOH, my right aerobar failed two minutes into my 60 mile ride on Sunday...couldn't get it remounted securely, had to pull them both off on the roadside and call my wife to come get them so I could continue the ride...sigh...longest planned training ride and I didn't get to work on staying in aero position...feh...

(Sorry to hear about the roof...)

Oh, I saw your ride was 4 mile loops. You didn't do a 60 miler on the Balboa Park loop did you?!  Yikes, no wonder you had a bad ride, thats insane! Well, you said hill at mile 40, so Im sure you went somewhere else :D

No...I just have my Garmin bike preferences set for 4 mile auto-lap splits (vs, 1 mile splits for runs)...no real interest in seeing what I did in each of 60 miles...4 mile chunks is plenty of info for me. I actually did (essentially) two 30 mile circuits of the west Valley...and the two circuits were in opposite directions and not exactly the same route (threw a little "spur" onto the second lap with a nasty hill that beat me up).

However, Sunday will start with 3 laps of Lake Balboa (~14.5 mi), then onto the streets for one 27 mile circuit of the west Valley (some easy hills), then back to Lake Balboa for 2 1/4 laps (~10.5 mi) = 52 mi. Then...yup...3 lap run (14.5 mi). Should be roughly 3 hrs/2 hrs brick.

Then taper on...

Yo Nine...  I got there when T1 opened and I was in like wave 7..  I wanted the extra time to get set up and relax..  I hung out with my family for about 20 minutes before leaving to get my "mind right"..  Parking can be a touch tight..  My hubby dropped me off and parked a few blocks away, in a small market parking lot..  PS: there is a Starbucks inside the market..  RE: wetsuit, it was touch-and-go up to race day if wetsuits would be legal and we were..  I wear a sleeveless and didn't get warm at all..  The water was nice but far from bath water, at least to me..  I saw many people with sleeveless and full suits...  Best thing to do is go down on Saturday and go for a swim.. Last year we stayed at the Comfort Suites in Santa Rosa and had no problem getting to Johnson's beach..  Again, I wanted to get there right after T1 opened just in case of traffic...  I would rather wait around and even chill out and take it all in, then be worried sick if there was a traffic back-up somewhere and I had to rush to T1..

Here is a link from the San Francisco Tri Club that has a very detailed overview of the bike course..  Hope it works for all of you...  Keep training and it won't be long now!!

You'll all have to look for my husband running around watching at various places while I race. He'll be easy to spot as he'll be accompanied by a 150-pound Saint Bernard!

I see so many dogs at triathlons Must be something that fits with the personality! My two will be hanging with their breeder in Santa Rosa - 3 dogs in the heat is too much for one person to handle while I'm out doing the race.

Santa Rosa is about 1/2 hour away from the start.

We're definitely getting into the close-enough-to-start-thinking-about-a-get-together zone. My wife (Liz) and I will probably be up for dinner, whether in Santa Rosa or elsewhere.

I am staying at the Comfot Inn or Comfort Suites, whatever it's called, in Santa Rosa.. I'll have my family with me Saturday night....  Mom, Dad, hubby, bro, and sister-in-law..  With this posting, it may be too many!  I would like the address just in case we aren't sure where to eat...  It will be an early evening for me, like say between 4-4:30...

Thanks...    Lori

Enginerd - THANK YOU so much for the pics!  And to everyone, thank you so much for your input on the race. Its my first HIM and I am really nervous.

I would like to join in some dinner the night before - Italian sounds great.  I'll keep checking back.

tcovert - I'm interested in your route for the brick you are doing this weekend - I know Balboa Park but after you leave the park - is it a tri club route?  any info you can give me would be appreciated. I plan on doing this saturday morning.

I was gonna PM you on the route...but, hey, maybe someone else might like to see it...

Basically, I have a two mile ride from home to Victory at Woodley (NE corner of the park). Then...

Did three laps of park (west to Balboa, south to Burbank, east to Woodley, north to Victory) - 3 x 4.8 miles = 14.4 miles (plus my initial 2 miles = 16.4). Used the "bike" path...spent most of my time dodging runners/walkers/strollers.

From Victory/Woodley, west on Victory to intersection with busway bike path (betw. Mason and Winnetka).
On bike path west to Canoga (end of bike path).
Canoga one block north to Vanowen
Vanowen east to DeSoto
DeSoto north to Rinaldi
Rinaldi east to Sepulveda
Sepulveda south to Victory
Victory west to Woodley
Total on streets = ~27 miles

Then wrapped up with two laps of park (2 x 4.8 = 9.6)
That's 52.9 miles. I rode one mile west to the Orange Line parking lot at Balboa and Victory where my wife had my transition stuff, so total was 53.9.

Plan on Sunday was to do three laps of park -- 14.4 miles -- for run, but it was just to hot to do that self-supported, so I stopped after one lap. (And added a 10 miler Monday night.)

There ya go. I do various versions of the route on the streets above (starting at home, so +2 miles) a lot. There are "spur" loops north of Rinaldi at either Tampa/Sesnon/Reseda or Woodley/Balboa that allow for adding big hills. It's safer if going south on Sepulveda heading for the park to actually bypass Victory and go down to the busway and ride west to the park that way--pavement on Victory betw. Sepulveda and Woodley is horrible. (West of Woodley, though, it's fine.) DeSoto and Rinaldi are good streets to ride in general. Sepulveda is dicier due to traffic...some rides I'll use Woodley for the southbound leg (shortens the ride, but adds a short hill).

Verna - Happy Birthday to you! (a little early I know)

Thanks for inviting me to come on the ride/run - I have to be at the office at 8:30 a.m. so I can't go with you. If you were going this saturday morning, I'd join you.

T - thank you so much for the route - I think I might do that this weekend.
