Does anyone have information on spectating?  Which are the best places for family and friends to look for participants?  Do they just watch our swim start, and then head up to watch T2?  Are there places they can watch us on the run...or just at the finish line?  Any info. would be much appreciated!

There are plenty of good spots to catch you on the bike course. I've ridden it a couple times now and am trying to come up with recommendations for my husband of where to stop. We cross or pass close to Hwy 101 3-4 times and those are all good spots for someone in a car to hop off the freeway and watch you go by without getting caught up too much in race traffic. The run course is a bit harder as it's an out and back on narrow country roads that don't intersect a lot of other roads and they'd practically have to drive on course to see you. I'm guessing maybe the race program, if it ever comes out (they said it would be out by 4 weeks before the race and yet...still nothing with less than 3 weeks to go), will have additional suggestions.

There are plenty of good places along the bike route. One place in particular, I know quite well, I marshalled it last year. The corner of Shiloh Road and Windsor Road. Shiloh road is very flat and you can see them coming from a long way off going from East to West. At the end of Shiloh Road is a sharp 90 degree turn onto Windsor Road. On the other side of the intersection, are plenty of places to park.

Of course, there are plenty of other good spots too. Bottom of Chalk Hill is good too as they will be hard on the brakes there is a sharp left hand up hill turn.

Thanks, muppetdog and jeffy. I'm going to print out a map of the bike course, highlight those areas that you both suggested, and then give that to my family.

Well, here we are, nearly 5pm on the 4th and STILL no race program (that they promised would be out 4 weeks before the race, that they promised would be out 3 weeks before the race, that they promised would be out by the 4th of July.....).

This is somewhat frustrating.

I don't know that I'm expecting further information, I just don't appreciate the inconsistency when it comes to delivery of scheduled snippets of information. It honestly doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence in the planning process.

In my work I don't say I'm going to deliver something by a certain date unless I'm going to do it.

Just call me in the midst of one cranky taper

Good luck with that. I ate $#!+ a month and a half or so ago, took a month to get the rash healed over.

Threw a major wrench into my training, I was rocking way ahead of where I thought I would be by that time, to now where I have just been getting back to race distance.

But will have fun even if I have to carry my self across the finish line.

Just in case anyone was wondering, the race program IS online as of this afternoon.

And yes, there was information that is now causing me to scramble to try to change plans

12 days and counting...

Well kiddies... We have 12 days to go.. I too have done my final 50/8 and 35/3 bricks these last (2) weekends..  I'll put in some swim time the next few days and then just chill a bit..  I did this race last year as my very first HIM..  It is well-run and the volunteers are great...  The swim is well marked and the bike course is well, a back country road "E ticket" course..  I simply kept other cyclists in view the whole way so I knew where I was going.. Then put my head down and slid!!

The run is fun and if it is yer first HIM, it will be a ball as you know you are doing it!  Just do not be lulled into the the out-and-back run thinking it will be  snap..  It is a rolly type course tht is going to keep you honest, but not a killer that you can't do it..  Whatever your expectations are, you can meet them if you just stay focused and keep moving..  The Vineman web site has been posting water temps every couple of days..  Not need to freak out if you need to wear a wetsuit like me...  It went right up to race day last year to be wetsuit legal..  And for me, if it isn't then I just do the best I can..

The day will be great..  The whole couse is beatuiful and hopefully not to damaged by any fires..  According to Amy at the web site a few days ago, the firse and smoke were not an issue... At this point we are all beyond our training plans...  It's time to chill and enjoy the next couple of weeks..

There's no fire damage on the course - I've biked it twice in the last few weeks. The closest fires were up in Lake County (or down in Marin) and even all the smoke from that has really cleared out. We're just starting a big heat wave so who knows what race day temp will be like!

Really? I didn't see much of anything in there  that wasn't on the website. Hope you're doing ok from the crash Wave starts were  posted last week, that made me unhappy but I'm over it. Glad I am staying about .25 mile from the start, no scrambling for me.

12 days!

I'm feeling better - road rash is starting to heal and I'm spotted with purple LOL but still got out for a swim today and hopefully a bike ride when I get my bike back later today.

Among things that weren't on the site...that you don't wear a chip and don't get a time if you start in the wetsuit wave at the end if the water is over 78 degrees. It's one thing to start you at the end and not not have you eligible for awards/prizes but to not even get a time? Kinda uncool. So anyway, check that off as not an option, I'll definitely be starting with my age group, wetsuit or not.

And then the website had no dogs at Johnson's Beach but not the part about no dogs at Windsor HS. Since we're less than 2 weeks out from the race at this point, and I've already booked well in advance for (more expensive) dog-friendly housing during our stay there, alternate dog care is NOT happening. Of course every triathlon I've ever been to - Wildflower in particular - says no dogs and then there are dogs everywhere. Anyway, my husband is not going to leave his in the car in the heat so they'll probably just sit across the street from the HS to watch me bike in/run out/run in.

It's getting close - very exciting!!!!

Yeah, he'll be happy as long as he's hanging with my husband.

I'm just excited for it to finally get here after all this training time! I'm gonna be slow and I'm gonna be one of the last people finishing but I'm going to enjoy every bit of it!

Anyone know what the ground of T1 is like?  I know the beach is gravel but is the transition on pavement or the gravel?  Since we have to pack all our stuff in a bag if I don't need a towel I won't bring one.  Transition on gravel = towel, transition on pavement = no towel.

It's gravel, but they put down carpet on the rows for the swim in and bike out.  I can't remember if there is carpet for each row of the bikes or not in T1.  Just looked back at my pics from last year, gravel next to the bike racks, so you may want to have a towel waiting for you at your bike.

There were dogs at the high school last year, just be sure they have lots of water and shade.

Thanks.  I have a vague recollection of people leaving stuff like towels behind instead of packing them up.

Thanks, we're bringing an EZ-Up and a cooler so they have their own tent to hang in.

Hey muppet...  I love the bruise.. Don't sweat it..  You'll do fine..  Last year was my first HIM... I had never been farther than 5-1/2 hours running a marathon so I had NO idea what to expect..  The water is wonderful and very calming... I just took it all in and lived every moment of it..  You know what ya gotta do... Just think about T1 and how you will transistion..  Everything you need to know is in the race program..  Go to Vineman home page > race program..  It's about 10 pages long but has a nice verbal layout and map of the course..  One word of advice..  Start with one or 2 bottles on your down tubes and nothing more..  There's water and gatorade on the course..

When you leave the bike racks and are running down the carpets to the driveway, the same one you will walk down to get to T1, I suggest that you run with yer bike to the top of the driveway and then mount..  Trying to mount at the bottom and being in 1st gear to get up it with people all around you, isn't safe..  The few minutes you take to get up the hill and on your bike is well worth it..  The bike course is a challenge but not that tough; just go with it...  The run is just a run... Run/walk it if you have to..  I'll probably see you out there..  I'll be in the same outfit you see in the avatar...

Take time now to rest, plan your race, print out your checklist and check it 3 times.. Wink
