just had my first tri this past weekend, no socks- it saved me a bunch of time trying to put socks on my wet feet. Make sure you do training runs without socks so you can tell if they will give you blisters.

Socks in T1, always. Takes a few extra seconds, but comfortable feet make for a comfortable race Plus I have very tender feet and the tiniest item in the lining of my shoes will give my unprotected feet a blister.

Done two sprints - no socks either time for the bike or the run, and I was fine. Do some training runs sockless to toughen up your feet I also put a teeny bit of body glide around the inside of the heels of my sneakers just in case.

I have never put them on in T1 and as I move into a HIM next year, I still don't think I will.  I will be putting them on in T2 for that one, though.  For sprints and even Olys, I stay sans sock the entire way.  The 10k is kind of pushing it for me without socks though.

If you've got the right shoes, you should be able to do the shorter distances without them, but it's really down to personal preference.  Is saving a few seconds in transition worth messing with your head on the bike or run as you worry about blisters?

I went no socks in my last race, and while the bike portion was chilly (ambient temp in the low 50s, wind about 8mph), my toes were so numb coming off the bike that they stuttered my cadence during the first mile on the run.

So, when it's warmer I advocate barefoot. When it's colder, take the extra 15 sec.

My shoes, Brooks Adrenaline, were in training for a sockless HIM in late July, but no more.

Last week I was on a 9 miler and felt like my left leg was wetter than usual, looked down and had blood on my left ankle, but no sign of the cut that let out the life juice.

Then I saw my right foot, just forward of mid foot in the mesh, was red. I was splashing blood from my right foot to my left ankle. I pulled it short a mile and a half and after looking like a fool yelling "Where the hell is that blood coming from" I pulled the socks off and had a blister on each arch from the insole wearing slightly thru, on each pinky toe and then a cut on the right foot from the junction from tween the mesh and leather.

So for my I will stay sockless for the bike, but run with socks always.

On another side note because of the junk on my feet I had to dape up my feet to protect them and yesterday taped them too tight and my feet were sore all day yesterday and most of today.

Socks in T2...costs me maybe 10 seconds...saves me many more seconds by having comfortable feet.

No socks at all for Sprint or Oly races. I wore them for the HIM and definitely plan on wearing them for my IM. Try it out in practice before you try it in a race.

From my point of view, you can have this doubt on Sprint or max Oly distances AND if 30-60 seconds more count for you.

For longer distances, does it make sense? How do you usually ride and run at your home? With or without? You should go the same for longer than Oly distances unless, again, 30-60 seconds make the difference for your final time.

In my case, only Sprint distances without, then always riding and running with.

Blisters can stop you training...

60 seconds more not!

Socks T1 until mid-summer, then at T2.
Final sprint last year I went sockless and my right foot found and rubbed an exposed stitch line in my Brooks Adrenaline shoes. So socks for now, maybe no socks later (only doing sprints).

Negatory on the socks on race day. I almost never wear socks when I'm riding (unless it's pretty cold out, and I'm actually riding outside on said cold day). Run training depends on the shoes, but I prefer a well-fitting shoe with no chafing seams, and no socks.

My sockless experiment led to massive blisters after one mile.

I put them on in T1, sprint and Oly. I see no reason for me to change until my engine gets good enough to care about 15 - 30 seconds.

no races under my belt as yet, but i have never worn socks on the bike in 5 or so years of riding......I do wear them running just to save my shoes from smelling like they have the funk....

No socks in T1, but I put socks on in T2 for the run. I tried going sockless twice (along with Body Glide and baby powded) and both times I ended up with a HUGE blister on my arch that kept me from running for a week afterwards.

It doesn't slow you down at all if you practice it. I was the only person in my training group to put on socks...and I had the fastest transition times!

I will definitely be wearing socks for the run at least (don't know about the bike yet). I ran after work last Friday, and had forgotten to pack socks. I figured what the heck, people are always posting that they did a sprint without socks. BIG MISTAKE for me. My feet started hurting just in front of my arches after only 1/2 mile. I made it to 2 1/2 miles before I couldn't stand it any longer. I stopped and pulled off my shoes - yep, blisters on both feet! I walked and carried my shoes back to the car! Swimming the next morning was not fun either!

I am currently in the sockless experiment--no issues riding and will probably (minus cold weather) never wear them on the bike again. 10 miles sockless running created some minor rubbing, but that's about it...I'm gonna keep doing it and see what my feet can handle. I have been body gliding the inside of my shoes, and that has helped tons I think.  Anyhow, I think the key for you here is to give it a shot and see what the feet can handle--just do it in training and don't wait till race day to decide!

I am with MoquiVA on this. T1 no socks, unless it is cold out. Had a sprint this weekend and rode without socks, ran on ice cubes. Normally, no socks in T1 because I want my feet dry when I put them on. My feet are sensitive creatures. I am prone to blisters in normal shoes. So, I will always treat them with respect and give them socks when running to keep them comfy.  Only took 5 seconds to put socks on. Mounting and dismounting my bike is where I loose time in transition.

Are you prone to blisters in normal shoes? If you are this may be an indication not to go sockless on a run.
