I have to do a presentation on something in the psych field. Anyone have any strange/interesting topics? I already did a presentation on Factitious disorders, not much info out there on that one so I'm looking for something more...interesting.

Gender identity issues, paraphilias, pyromania and trichotillomania have been taken or done before. Open to any suggestions.

Actually, a presentation on phobias might work. Strange phobias and common treatments. I'll think about it.

I don't know if this will qualify and I know you said Gender Identity issues have been done..

BUT last night I was listening to a good piece on NPR (All things considered.. i think) that was discussing gender reassignment in children.. i.e. letting a child take the identity of the opposite sex and taking medications to keep the adolecent from entering puberty..  I only heard the first half but you might want to check out NPR.org if you are interested..

I heard the same episode! There is another part on this evening. I don't know if that will work as its extremely close to a subject one of my classmates is doing.

Our local paper ran a story about a woman who did not recognize faces. She had to recognize people by their voice, their hair, their walk, certain mannerisms, that sort of thing. She didn't even recognize her daughter, who had come into her office and was sitting in her chair. It is an actual psychological disorder. Sorry I can't remember the name of it.

I KNOW everyone will laugh at this but I suffer from:

Myrmecophobia-The Fear of Ants, no I have never went to a psych. for this, but I can't stand ants, I cringe just seeing them, I will walk around a spot on the ground if there is even ONE.

Im like a little girl if one touches me.

you do not kid, you crazy cat.

What about Munchausen and Munchausen by proxy? It's one I really do not get....

from wikipedia: (not reliable for academic study, but a good place to go for starters.)

Munchausen syndrome is a psychiatric disorder in which those affected fake disease, illness, or psychological trauma in order to draw attention or sympathy to themselves. It is in a class of disorders known as factitious disorders which involve "illnesses" whose symptoms are either self-induced or falsified by the patient. It is also sometimes known as hospital addiction syndrome

Wahooaphobia.  - (from wikipedia so it is not that reliable) Fear of wahoos.  This tends to occur in females when they are around me.

How about OCD?  There's a lot of information out there, treatments have come a long way in the last 20 years, and personally I find it a fascinating disorder to identify and treat.  Lots of ways it presents, often has a family history.  Or if you want to go somewhat more exotic, there's PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune-mediated Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus B) - in pre-pubertal children, following strep infection (typically a strep throat), abrupt onset of tics, choreaform movements, and/or OCD symptoms.  Treatment is still being identified and defined.  I've seen 2-3 cases in 20 years.

Thanks for the ideas! Keep them coming.

Munchausen was part of my Factitious disorders presentation, been there done that. People with that particular kind of factitious disorder feign physical illnesses rather than mental illness like schizophrenia. Anyway, can't do that one.

I'll look into PANDAS, thanks for the suggestion.

Max, someone is already doing gender identity issues! However, I can find a good therapist in your area is you'd like.

Liberalism??  Might be too involved of a subject for just one class though!  JK...sort of!

Actually, if you want to come to work with me in the ER any weekend night I'm sure you could find plenty of worthwhile subjects.

I don't think Liberalism would fly here in my Army course.

I'm working in the ER right now, there might be some stragglers coming in soon from a night of partying and whatnot. I might find something today.

I suggest Borderline Personality Disorder. My ex-wife has it. It's scary, it's bizarre, and many professionals won't even treat it because those who have it cannot be convinced that there is anything wrong with them, and they end up suing the doctor for everything from sexual harassment to malpractice.

One woman wrote a book called "Sometimes I Act Crazy" and claims she has actually been treated for it. The book I read to deal with my ex is called "Stop Walking on Eggshells." Strangely, BPD is not necessarily a rare disease, as about 2 million people are suspected of having it. It's more prevalent in women than men.

This is the stangest one I've come across.... they'll eat anything, it's scary and the things the surgeons remove from their insides  is amazing !  I had one patient pull his IV line out of his arm with his teeth and was chewing on it within seconds and that was with someone sitting in the room watching him.  (He was an adult in his 40s who has been in an institutional setting his whole life, and has had multiple surgeries to remove items he's eaten)
