Subject: RE: How many Ironmen are there?OK, the OP asked for the number of finishers since the firrt IM. Here is my estimate: 75 is probably too high for the number of races. With the exception of CA and maybe TX, assume not more than one IM per state. Let's say 35 of the 50 states host an IM event.
Let's say 1/2 of those are M-dot and hold 2000 = 35,000 and 1/2 hold only 500 so another 9,000. Total 44,000.
Now lets say 1978 till 2008 = 30 years.
Let's say IM events grew linearly from 1 participant in 1978 to 44,000 in 2008.
OK, need Excel now....
1978 | 1 | 1979 | 1334 | 1980 | 2668 | 1981 | 4001 | 1982 | 5334 | 1983 | 6668 | 1984 | 8001 | 1985 | 9334 | 1986 | 10668 | 1987 | 12001 | 1988 | 13334 | 1989 | 14668 | 1990 | 16001 | 1991 | 17334 | 1992 | 18668 | 1993 | 20001 | 1994 | 21334 | 1995 | 22668 | 1996 | 24001 | 1997 | 25334 | 1998 | 26668 | 1999 | 28001 | 2000 | 29334 | 2001 | 30668 | 2002 | 32001 | 2003 | 33334 | 2004 | 34668 | 2005 | 36001 | 2006 | 37334 | 2007 | 38668 | 2008 | 40001 | | | Total: | 620031 | % Finishers | 85% | | 527026 | Repeat Offenders = 30% | 70% | Grand Total: | 368,918 |
