Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: Wildlife encounters This morning on my ride a pretty bluebird was cruising parrallel to me for about 1/4 of a mile. I clocked him at 22 mph. Bluebirds are so pretty. Many people confuse bluebirds with blue jays which are much, much bigger, not as bright blue and mean. I hate jays as they will run off or kill the songbirds. Later in the ride a young doe was in a cotton field and took off running.....again, parrallel to me. I hammered as hard as I could and was going about 24 mph when she gracefully ran ahead of me and cross over the road in front of me into the woods. Twice I rode by big snakes right on the edge of the road.....both were dead but not mangled so startled me. I do love the outdoors! ~Mike |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters PennState - 2008-06-14 2:15 PM Actually I see a lot of wildlife on my rides... deer especially. Groundhogs and squirrels. They all like to dash out in front of me and scare me out of the aerobars...
I saw a goundhog for the first time in my life a few months ago. I've lived in the south all my life and I never knew they lived this far south. Kinda figured they all lived up in your area...like Punkstawnee Phil. ~Mike |

Elite 2661 DC Metro, slowly working my way to NC | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters Well, not exactly wildlife, but I had an encounter with a VERY friendly boxer dog the other day. "Oh boy, oh boy, we're running!!!!" Didn't even realize she was right behind me, and when I went from run to walk, she just plowed right into the back of me. Her poor owner was chasing her, yelling, "I swear she won't hurt you!" Nope, just wanted another friend. |

Expert 769 Murfreesboro, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters I ran across a red fox. He was on a paved trail I ride and was facing the opposite way. I rode up very close before he knew I was there. First time I had seen a fox. I didn't even know we had them in this area. |

Member 239 Apex, NC | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters Accumulate these over the years. Scared a turkey vulture away from it's road kill, he was about 10 feet over my head and pressed his wings down as I went by. Got a lung full of vulture smell. They smell like what they eat. I still get queasy thinking about that smell. Pheasant missed me by about 8 inches while I was going 28 mph. I've got a bunny that's been joining me on my 20 second strides. He shows up on the walking path and runs alongside me for a while. Happened 4 times yesterday as I was covering the path a couple of times. Had my first close call with a duck this morning. He decided at the last minute to cross by walking in front of me. As I swerved going by he had the audacity to quack at me! So I turned and quacked back at him. I saved a turtle the other day. He was trying to cross a busy road. I stopped and got off my bike. A car stopped and let me carry the turle the rest of the way across. Darn turtle didn't even thank me. |

Regular 206 | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters Around here (northern Chicago 'burbs) the best places to run are the forest preserves. I see deer a few times a year. Better in the forest preserve then on the road. I also have a 2.2 mile loop that I do on the road my house is on. It goes past the park and several times I've run past the skunk that lives there. Close enough once that I could tell it was thinking about spraying. I stick to the other side of the road now. |

Veteran 265 Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters I have some odd animal run ins. Last week when I was running along a path at the resort in South Padre Island, I was cooling down and along the little stream a pretty bird flew by me and took a big crap. Same resort, different visit, I was jogging through the resort, enroute to the beach. I saw a stray or feral cat lift up its tail and spray a palm tree.

Saw a wild hog run across the road, its got out of my way real quick The neatest was a alligator. It was walking across the road, taking its damn time. I had to slam on my brakes or I would have ran into it. def. makes rides more exciting! |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters With all the nature watching, I hope you do keep an eye on the road for vehicles. During IM Moo mini-camp training last week, I saw a HUGE snapping turtle on the road that was run over by a vehicle. It didn't look good. The crash pics would have been terrible to look at. |

Master 1277 | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters Encounters, or wildlife we hit? My commuting head lamp seems to make the local deer stop a s if I were a car. Thankfully I've not hit one of them yet. But, while crusing at 22-24, I've managed to hit 2 birds who were just getting up outta the bike path, and it's quite unpleasant to clean up after. I've seen any number of turkey vultures as well. Nothing much more exotic yet, but as the season goes on, the rides will get more backwoods.

I almost went over my handlebars once cause a bird flew directly in front of me and I must've missed it by a few inches. I've also noticed squirrels aren't too smart around here and they seem to try to outrun me and dive back and fourth across my path. |

Master 1686 Royersford, PA | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters I visited Yellowstone National Park a few years before the Old Faithful Inn burnt down, but getting up early and running thru the Upper Geyser Basin along the Firehole River was one of the coolest things I've ever done. I saw moose, wolves, a couple bald eagles, a ton of paire dogs and finished up about 5 feet away from a Buffalo (He was on the other side of a revine and could care less about me). Had to get the wife and kids out of bed to come see the Buffalo. |

Expert 1535 Coeur D'alene, ID | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters Well, I see tons of deer on my rides and runs. Throw in Bald eagles, various kinds of hawks, turkeys, rabbits, coyotes, elk, moose, ducks, geese, snakes, squirrels, rockchucks, and a hundred different kinds of songbirds and it sounds like I train in a zoo! Just routine days here in the great NorthWest! I love living here! On another note, I saw the biggest Bull Snake I've ever seen the other day while I was running. At least 5 1/2 feet long and big around as my wrist. Beautifully colored too...very cool to see! |

Veteran 277 South Florida | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters I live in South Florida, so on my run, bike or swim I get to see all kinds of wildlife. Last week there were 2 homeless people sleeping on a park bench along my running route, one threw something at me, I think it was a gel pack. I bunny hopped over a dead pitbull on my bike trail, he was all swollen. Friday, along the beach, I helped a bunch of people into shore. I wasn't sure what they were doing out so early, but they didn't speak any English and their rafts were made of bamboo. And finally, Saturday, I had to run pretty early, in the dark, but it was OK, because the Sheriffs Office gave me a lighted escort with a helicopter through my neighborhood, that really got the blood pumping!!! God Bless America!!!!! P.S. Everything is true. But it didn't all happen in one week. Oh, I almost forgot, last week I was searched and handcuffed for doing exercises in my local park before dawn. But they were nice, they let me go without tazing me. |

Pro 4608 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Wildlife encounters I almost went over the handlebars, too, when a squirrel froze in front of me on a steep downhill and then ran right under my bike. I hit it with my foot when pedaling down, but luckily didn't actually run it over. I went back and didn't see the body, so it must have gotten lucky. Once my husband and I were riding in Central Park and the big red-tail hawk that lives up there, Pale Male, swooped right in front of us - we could have touched him. He landed on a low branch just a few feet away so we stopped and watched for a bit. I can't believe how many people didn't even notice him, even when he flew low across the road! |
