So, just thought I would extend the invite to all on here if you would like to do a sprint in August. The Newport Naval Base is putting on a TRI for, I think, $50.00 for civilians. You can get the info through Active.com. Should be a great affair. We do all kinds of 5k's here (one per month) so the route is fairly well taken care of. The swim will be held in the Stillwater Basin, close to where the mothballed carriers are, and the bike on Defense Highway. It wouldn't suprise me if they shut down the road for the bike as the road belonged to the Navy at one point. I ride the road (most of it) to and from work all the time and even if they don't shut down traffic the shoulder is fairly wide and well maintained.
If interested and you need more info let me know and I will see what I can get for you.

Scott

Thinking about doing this one.  I love the entry fee for Active Duty/Dep!!!  Can't be beat!

Agreed, not bad for civilians either. Hopefully it will be very well organized. The base just got a new swim coach (used to do college coaching) so if I don't do shoulder surgery for next year I will be set!!!

Any idea if we can get in the basin for a practice swim???  Do you know if the Gym has a course map yet?

I will ask about the practice swim but unless you are active duty and know one of the EOD guy's probably not. I talked with the lady in charge of the swim portion and she laid out the course for me.

Swim:
Straight out from the boat ramp, sharp left hand turn, then another sharp left to the ramp again. Think icosolees(sp?) triangle pointed to the left. There will be the green carpet stuff leading up the ramp to T1/T2.

T1/T2:
Located in the EOD compound. Bike mount/dismount line will be at the road.

Bike:
I actually drove the distance to see if she was right. Turn left out of the EOD compound and dollow Defense Hwy/Burma Rd. until you reach the turn to go up the hill to Mellville Navy Housing. U-turn and come back. Round trip is like 8.6 miles so I am thinking it will be a two loop trip. There are no hard hills but a couple rollers.

Run:
Leave transition in the compound and turn right towards the base. The gate that has yet to be officially opened to traffic will be open for the race. Go in the gate and proceed straight, veer right to go up the hill by the bowling alley/enlisted club then down to the water in front of the Seanior Enlisted Academy. Turn left(this is where it gets hazy as the just started street work on this road that is fenced off so they may reroute) then probably to the main road by the bridge. Turn left and follow the curve to the stop sign. Turn right and follow back to EOD.

Not sure of the run mileage as they may adjust the course but will be roughly 5k. Hope this helps some.

Just registered!!!!  This is going to be my first tri, and I don't have a wetsuit yet - wondering if I should just go without one?  Water is pretty warm these days, and I may not have time to really practice with the wetsuit, so I think I might be better off without it. Any thoughts?

I'm so excited!!!!

I am not using a wetsuit. Going to rent one for the Firmman if I do it but not a sprint. You should be fine.

I'm not using a wetsuit either.  You should only be in the water for like 10-15 mins anyways.  I did an open water swim off Second Beach in Middletown 2 days ago w/ no wetsuit and the water temp was perfect!  The basin may even be warmer.

TRIChief, thanks for the info on the race course.  See you out there!

Skipping the wetsuit too.  My past two OWS swims have been without it and it was really nice (temp wise).  I do like it for the speed but for 1/3 mile, I don't think it's worth it (it takes me FOREVER to get the thing off!!).  Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

I will be signing up...it is about time they had a tri in the Newport area!

I will be using a wetsuit for this race. Not so much because of the temperature but because I think my speed in a wettie will be far more than the time lost taking it off (as opposed to just tri shorts). Don't count out that bouyant effect!

Hoping someone can answer a few more questions -

The listing for this event on trifind.com says that it starts at 7am, but the Active.com event page lists the start time at 8am - which is correct?

Also, how early will we be able to get onto the base to set up our stuff in transition?  And lastly, what's the plan for allowing spectators onto the base? I'd love it if my husband could be there to see me finish. Will he have any problems getting in?

I will call tomorrow and ask. I can tell you that the signs on base all say 8:00 am. I believe the start/T1/T2/finish are all located off base but considering most of the run is on base they should allow visitors on. Like I said I will call tomorrow and find out.

Subject: UPDATED!!
Just got off the ephone with the coordinator. You can show up to set up transistion at 6:00 am. You must park at Pier 2 (this is where the Coast Guard ships are) and must walk to the start (approx. 1/4 mile). The gate to enter is at the end of Fleet Pier Acces Road (Gate 25). She assured me there would be many signs saying where to go. The swim will take place in the EOD compound area along with transitions and the finish. Registration starts at 7:00 am and first wave at 8:00 am. Defense Hwy (aka Burma Road) will be completely closed to traffic for the bike at 7:00am. Access to the base for civilians should be open at 6:00 am and throughout the day for the race. As I said before there are no major hills on the bike and one short medium hill on the run. The bike will be a two loop affair. If you get to the base around 6 and are unsure where to go just ask any gate guard or give me a call at (401) 207-4970. There earlier you get there for registration the more likely to get a shirt (if you are into shirts) and she informed me that right now she has 98 people signed up and 100 shirts. If you happen to be military and can get here before the race you can register anytime that Gym 109 is open, or if you wait until race morning it will be held onsite.

Sounds well organized so far, this will set the tone for future races as they are trying to impress the powers that be to make it an annual thing and plan to look for official sanctioning next year. On a side note, they wanted to do a kids triathlon but the base wants to see how this one goes first, look for one next year. Hope to see you all there, you can't miss my truck. Bid black Doge with a duck on the hood. I will probably be the onlyy one riding a bike with flames (05 QR Caliente) and a read disc. Feel free to call if needed.

Thanks Scott.  I'll be there around 6:00 as I like to sit around and be nervous before the start!  I'll look for you.  I'm riding a vintage Schwinn road bike (don't be jealous!!!) and driving a black Explorer.  I'll probably be wearing the same gear as in my avatar.  See you all Sunday!

Thanks so much for all the info, Scott! I'll probably get there around 6:15, and I'll be the newbie who's wandering around looking terrified  : )   I drive a maroon Honda Accord, and would love to have someone to chat with while I'm waiting and setting my stuff up. This is my first tri, so I'm going to be a nervous wreck!  Really excited, too, though :

Good luck to everyone competing at the sprint, weather is looking good, have fun, stay safe and Kick butt!

Well, this was my first tri, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thought it was a very well-organized and well-supported event. I was so unbelievably nervous about the swim, but it went so much better than I anticipated - and after getting the swim out of the way, the bike and run almost seemed easy!  I had a blast, and can't wait to do my next one!!!!  Just found the results online - does anyone know if they'll be posting race photos anywhere?

Yep...they did a great job with this one. The only thing that was a problem was the bike racks (not enough). It seemed to get cleared up pretty quick as the folks seemed pretty well organized. Post race was great! They had cooks making omlets and pancakes! Are you kidding?! I will be back for this one next year.

Congrats to Kathleen as (I think) she won her age group.

Did anyone else think the swim was long?

Wow, they did a fabulous job especially for its first time!  Can you believe a technical shirt was given out?   I'd like to think the swim was a bit long, based on my time, but I never thought that until you brought it up.  May have been our navigating skills?  or lack thereof!  Thanks for the congrats, that was me winning my age group, but quite humbling to have three women nearly 10 years older than me beat me out, but FABULOUS all the same!

What's next for everyone?  I'm doing Wild Dog in two weeks, then Cranberry OLY which is my "A" race.  Unfortunately, I move after the Cranberry to Florida temporarily, then San Diego in November, the TRI mecca!  So, with all my moving, I may not do a tri for a few months after the end of August.  I'm getting all my tris this season done in one month.

Very impressed too with this race.  Great support on the course and just a well run event.  I'll be making this one an annual event.  I too wonder about race photos.  Anyone heard anything about this?  I wish I was doing Wild Dog but it doesn't work out with my hubby's sea schedule.  My next is still up in the air.  I am hoping to do the Hartford women's tri in Sept.  If not, the Hartford half marathon in calling my name!
