Master 2327 North Alabama | Subject: Upcoming Swim Challenge - the 6000 club I've always been a pretty good swimmer. I've got a pretty strong background in the field, but received a good awakening when I joined the local Master's Team. My times have dropped, distance increased, and overall ability is a huge plus. No complaints. Well the coach seems to have some form of challenge every few months or so to keep in interesting and give us something to strive for. Great! His latest challenge is the "6000 Club". He's going to hold the challenge every 3months or so. It will consist of 60 x 100 on 2:00 send offs. It's all or nothing; no partial credit. After each challenge, the names will be reset and you have to earn your spot on the wall each time. Now, going through my logs, I'm swimming 2800-3500yrds 3x per week generally in 65-80mins and have been doing so for a few months now. But, the 6000yrd has me a little nervous Some of my latest TT - 1:25/100, 1:29/100, 1:32/100, 3:20/200, on Feb 18. Is it even reasonable to think I could essentially double my distance in the same time, with only 3mo under my belt? Is it reasonable to even think that my training is at a point to try this, or should I hold out for the next one? I'm thinking I ought to hit the pool a little more than just Masters for some practice, so should I throw in a series of 100's for practice? I want to shoot for it, but I'm a little skeptical. Ideas? |

That's not bad, sounds like a good workout! Agreed. It's worth trying. When I did workouts like this when I was on swim team, one of the important things was pacing. In your case, I might shoot for 1:45 - 1:50/100. You get a little bit of rest and you won't be too tired. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Upcoming Swim Challenge - the 6000 club That would make for a long workout... For me, I would probably start with 15" of rest by swimming easy, but I'm sure that would slow down to a continuous swim after about 4000 yards... Yikes. I bet I could do it if I treated it like a race or challenge, and not just another workout... But that would be the longest swim I ever did by about 1200 yards.... I would have to look to see If I ever did 5k before... Edited by Aikidoman 2009-03-05 11:26 AM |

One time deal. I mean, he has patience and all, but he doesn't mull around very much. Usually he's on the deck pacing watching for strokes, making corrections, checking in w/ everyone, and keeping up with our time trials. Quite the busy man.

Whistle? That's what pace clocks are for. Workouts like that are just good excuses for coaches to go sleep in the office. Back in the day, we uswed to have new year's eve workouts where we would swim the new year in 100s on 1:10. So... 84x100 on 1:10. Fun stuff. Now...you kids...get offa my lawn! |

I wrote that because I really enjoy running and biking, but swimming just seems completely boring to me. 60 X 100 might look like it sucks, but it doesn't look boring (to me, anyway). |

Subject: RE: Upcoming Swim Challenge - the 6000 club meh, I think it's a good challenge for yourself. Not up to you to excite other posters with your swim workouts My coach recently blogged about finally reaching her milestone... 100 x 100 on 100 (seconds, 1:40). yowza........ most I ever did was 40 x 100 on 1:40 for coach's 40th birthday. It's interesting the watch the progression and when the second wind comes on Edited by ChrisM 2009-03-05 12:22 PM |

They set up lanes by pace and send off times. I have no desire to do such a thing but the paces would be to fast for me if they did. Go for it...if you have the desire. |

That's not bad, sounds like a good workout! Agreed ^^^ Why not? What is the worse that could happen, you have to wait three months to try again? What is the rest interval between 100's? I am not getting the 2:00 send off thing. You have to do each 100 in 2:00 or under? Whatever you swim under 2:00 is your rest period. Meaning, you swim in 1:30/100, you get :30 of rest? |

You have to do each 100 in 2:00 or under? Whatever you swim under 2:00 is your rest period. Meaning, you swim in 1:30/100, you get :30 of rest? Yea, the pace clock will be set for 2:00. You swim your 100yrds. If you finish in 1:40, you get a :20 rest interval. If you finish in 1:59, well you catch your breath and go again. Basically there will be 120mins to do the event in. Finish it or not. Going back, part of me really wants to do it, just to try to see where I am. To have a challenge. But the other part of me really doesn't want to get in the way and keep the guy/gal behind me from making their splits. I'm thinking of trying it at least. Success is built upon many failures - right? Oh, and no tshirt for it. Just your name on the wall. That's it. I already got a tshirt for the Polar Bear Challenge (place in the top 10 among swimmers for Jan-Feb). |

Yep, that's right. Very doable is you can cruise at 1:30. Chris coach doing them on the 1:40 would be a solid challenge. |

Pro 6011 Camp Hill, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Upcoming Swim Challenge - the 6000 club This past Sunday, my main set was a 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 500, 400, 300, 200, 100 pyramid (total 3,600 yd) with send-offs on multiples of 2:00 per 100 (2:00 for 100, 4:00 for 200, 6:00 for 300, etc.) and using a pull buoy for the odd # swims. I've got to admit that coming back down the pyramid I was struggling to make it by the next send-off for some of the swims, but the ones I pulled weren't too bad. I could maybe make it pulling, but to do that for a full 6,000 yd swimming would probably rip my arms off. I say go for it! |

Do you have to stop each 100? Can you bank time? Suppose you do 500 without stopping and happen to hit the 500 at the 1:50 mark but want to rest longer than 10 secs? Do you have to go when the 2:00 mark is reached no matter what? Edited by mrbbrad 2009-03-05 2:18 PM |

Do you have to go when the 2:00 mark is reached no matter what? Yes. (at least that's what XXX on the X:XX means in general swimming terms) Otherwise, it's not 60 x 100. If you need to rest longer than the interval, you can't do it yet |
