I've got clip on aero bars put onto my road bike. I intend to train the majority of my cycling in this position. I want to do a few cycle races this upcoming summer (100k+) and was wanting to know if by only cycling in aero, if it would build up strength and fitness in the different muscles required for road cycling?

Or won't it make much difference? Cycling is cycling?

It is useful to spend some time training in the position you expect to be racing in order to adapt to that position.  But, for the most part, cycling is cycling.

I train almost exclusively in aero. When getting ready for a century last fall, I began doing some training in the drops, just so that my arms and shoulders would be able to handle it on the day of the ride. There was quite a bit of both individual as well as group riding that day, so it was good to be ready for it.

Races or events/rides?

Races under USAC will not allow aero bars except in TT events.

Sponsored events/rides??  Then follow whatever the event director says is allowed.  They aren't races afterall.

And riding is riding, the more you do the better.

Cycling is Cycling.

Many of people that I ride with on a regular basis race Mt. Bikes, Cyclecross, TTs, and much more.  some of them ride 1 bike all of the time and set it up for specific races (these would all be road races) and some have specific bikes for each event.  But all of them use riding on any bike on a regular basis as their "training" for any event.

Most of my riding is done in a group on my TT frame, so I spend A LOT of time on the horns in training.  However, this has not limited my ability to go aero during races and it has continued to make my legs stronger.
