While on my run yesterday I saw a lot more bikes than usual riding the route for this race. Looks like people are getting ready. I'll be doing that, myself, next weekend.

I'm doing this triathlon, too. I was visiting my boys in Pasadena a couple of weeks ago, but didn't think to bring my bike! They are only about 15 min. from the venue.  I wanted to do the swim but didn't realize it was in the fishing lake and that wouldn't be possible. I'm getting excited...trying not to be nervous. This is tri #2 for me and first lake swim. I've watched the video from last year several times for mental preparation. Good luck!

This race will be my first triathlon! I'm pretty excited, went and did 480 meter OWS at Bayshore Bay in Long Beach so I feel like I have nothing to worry about.

I also convinced two other co-workers/friends to race as well. So there will be at least 3 newbies there come sunday morning.

Two of us did the bike portion, but I am almost certain we rode it backwards (clockwise). Truely hoping to love sunday August 16th!

Clockwise is the way. We'll get off the road and go up onto Hansen Dam from the gate on Wentworth.

I have done this Sprint Tri a couple of times and it is great for beginners. The water is typically warm, some peple do still wear wetsuits other opt not to in order to save time in T#1.
Bike is mostly flat with a few short hills then over the Dam back to the start. Run is flat and dusty in places with a hill just before the end o the run. Hansen Dam has become very popular in the last couple of years. Well worth it.

Yeah, my very first was a reverse tri with a 150 yd pool swim. When I researched for the next, this one sounded like the perfect next step up. I feel so prepared for this one and definitely prepared to have a blast.

Saw people practicing during yesterday's ride and today's run.

I ran approximately what the trail run should be (the lousy map on the race site isn't very clear). While I may have messed up a turn or two I don't see how I could have lose 1/2 mile. The Garmin said 2.5 miles after I was done. It's almost all dirt trails so expect to get dusty.

I dipped my toes in the lake yesterday and talked to someone who just got done with a swim (I think he works there) and it's warm. Not "not cold" but warm. I pity the fool that wears a wetsuit without checking the water first.

Good to know about the water ... and good because I don't own a wetsuit yet.  Having watched the videos from last year, I was surprised to see how many wore wetsuits.  Besides being warm it is such a short swim.  I had the opportunity to swim in a local lake yesterday that will be the venue for a tri in September and the water was about 72. After swimming I thought there is no way I would wear a wetsuit in that. So, I kind of figured Hansen Dam would be warm.  Also, yesterday weather wise it was mid 70's when we jumped in the lake--unheard of for August. It looks like it is warming up again for next weekend so I'm thinking it's going to be hot, hot again.

As for the run, I'm thinking I'll be well prepared since I pretty much train in the dirt easements in my neighborhood...lots of uneven terrain as well. I'm curious to see how that prepares me for next Sunday.

Thanks for the info!

I just took a drive around the bike course, it looks really, really fast!
This will be my first Tri in about 15 years! I can't wait!

Thanks for the course info. I was looking at the run area from Foothill (at 45mph) and couldn't really tell if there were any hills.

Good luck all, see you there.

I downloaded last year's results and noticed the bike times were pretty short--a lot less than I estimated for myself. So, I'm hoping that means fast, flat course and not just that I'm the slowest cyclist ever. I'm preparing to fly.

The bike times are also short because the course isn't 11 miles. It isn't even 10 miles.

So, you have a bike that is over a mile shorter than claimed, a run that is nearly 1/2 mile shorter than claimed. The swim course is probably a bit short, too. Makes for fast times. :-)

That explains a few things.
When I drove around the bike course yesterday, the only thing I saw that gave me pause was the bike-path section. Just after the turn from Wentworth onto the bike path, there is a little climb up to the top of the dam. It's narrow and looks like it could get a little conjested there. Any problems here in past years?

This is my first time doing this tri (it's only my third) so I can't comment on years past. They should be opening that gate up and the bike path itself is a two-lane bike path, so there is enough room to pass (which I have done there). I'm thinking we should be stretched out enough by that point that it won't be a problem but I cannot say for sure. The path is MUCH wider at the top of the dam.

I mapped the bike route on BT and I got 10.56 miles. So, huh. I didn't save it.

I wasn't going to admit it, but I geeked-out and did the same thing using Map My Ride. I got about 10.25 miles, but was measuring to the lot just outside of the immediate waterfront lot.

It sounds like you're more familiar with the venue. I haven't physically been too Hansen Dam since it was a dam and the swimming area was a roped off part of the dam. So, I mapped it on BT with the website map of the route open and just tried to match the points. Yours may be more accurate.

OK - I just checked it again using Google Earth and it is definitely under 10.25m. Depends on which lot they place the transition area in, but probably ~10.2 miles.

Kathy - The course is very flat with the exception of a quick climb to the top of the dam. The pavement looks pretty good, not great... but I didn't see any major potholes or the like.

Yeah, I was including the in and out from transition as it appears on the route. But 10 or 11 miles it doesn't really make that much difference. Fast and flat sounds good to me. And no potholes sounds great.  I actually went to my LBS yesterday to pick up some tubes and a C02 cartridge and got a lesson on how to change my tire...just in case. I don't want to get stuck half way out. So, I'm ready and really looking forward to this.

that was a great race, minus the whole transition entrance issue.  as for the lengths of each discipline, the swim was atleast 500 yd as advertised.  I completed the swim in about 9 minutes, which is a little slow for me at that distance.  unfortunately, i didn't get to use my p2c because it is in the shop and my roadie doesn't have a working comiputer.  however, i did see that i finished the bike in about 30 minutes, which is probably around the right time for 10.5~ miles.  I think the run at 3 miles was spot on.

I agree, it was a great race! The water was a relief after standing waiting in the cool morning air (yeah, I was that women over 40 next to last wave)--totally felt like a bathtub. Yet SO many people wore wetsuits for the buoyancy.  Makes me glad that I've trained in the swim enough not be be dependent on a wetsuit if the water is warm.  I agree the swim was the full 500 yds, and the bike was 10.5 according to my computer. The run seemed short based on my time. I dunno. Finished in 33 min.and I'm a 12 min/miler--and I walked some of those hills. I had great transitions.  What was the issue with the bike in and out that you refer to? So, I'm curious, for the earlier finishers was there anything to eat besides apple slices? They were almost out of water when I got in.

I had a great time. My sons, my parents and even my brother came to cheer me on and take pictures.

Yes, the Hansen Dam Triath-LINE was a grueling endurance event... and I'm just talking about the lines to get into the place. I waited in a line to pick-up my race packet, a line to pick-up my timing chip, another line for the T-Shirt, a separate line to get my swim cap and then the mother of all lines to get into the transition area. Glad I got there early.

Fortunately, everything went without a hitch after the gun fired.

I really hate to be too hard on race organizers, I can't imagine all the stuff they have to juggle. Hopefully they will get some constructive feedback and fix a few things next year. Fortunately the stuff that really matters... course, safety and timing... seemed to go well today.

Yes, I'm glad I got there early, too. That bike line was crazy. I didn't mind the little lines I went through the day before. I actually didn't wait in any lines--there were none when I was there around 1:30 p.m. I couldn't believe how many people showed up after 6:00 or even at 6:30.  I did get some good deals on merchandise on Saturday, though. A pair or Zoot shorts and a tri-top for $20/each.

I had fun! I met my goal time, and even stopped to walk 3 times during the run, which was unfortunate, but I found the trail sand to be quite soft and tiring. They only thing that was long and boring was being in the last female wave, sucha long wait!

Egg on my face. A few people were comparing what our computers said for the bike distance and the average was about 10.16 miles.
