Subject: 2010 race season over before it even started...
Middle of this week I had some aching/soreness in my rear right ribcage and shoulder, I put it down to muscle soreness after a hard swim on Monday night. It started to get progressively worse until it got to where I couldn't draw a full breath without the pain being too intense, and I couldn't lay down without pain. No recent injuries etc that could have cracked a rib.

Cue a trip to the ER, where they initially suspected a gall bladder issue as the issue seemd to have flared up after I ate meals, but after a battery of ultrasounds, chest X-rays and CAT scans the docs found that I have bilateral pulmonary embolisms. Been in the hospital for two nights now, the doctors have no idea where the clots came from as an ultrasound of my legs came up clear. They're testing for any genetic factors that might have contributed to the clots forming (Factor V something).

I'm going to be on coumanin (sp?) for at least 6 months, so for the races I've already signed up for this year, I'll likely be volunteering instead of racing. At least I have a good excuse for my crappy conditioning this year

Just a heads-up to anyone who experiences this type of persistent rib pain to get it checked out - my doctors told me I was very lucky I came to the ER it when I did.

Oh man, sorry to hear that, but very glad to hear that you've caught it before it caused major problems for you!  Good luck with your recovery, and I hope you get out of the hospital soon, unless yours is different from mine the food is terrible.

Chris M had something very similar about 6 months ago.  He is good to go now.  Sending good thoughts to you

Best of luck on a quick recovery and hope that your tests come back positive.  Who knows, maybe this is your Armstrong moment?  If you make the big time afterwords, don't forget us small folk.

Very gentle {{{MELON PRESS}}} because I don't want to hurt your chest.

REALLY glad you got checked out when you did, and all the best for your recovery.

Super of you to volunteer if you can't race.

Hope everything goes well,

as others have said, you may want to talk to chris M, or if you are looking for others that have been through this put something up on slowtwitch. i know there were two diff people over there in the last year that posted similar stories and a LOT of people came out to talk about their experiences with it and they are all now racing again and healthy.

good luck.

Most unfortunate that this has happened, but glad you got to the doctor when you did!

Sorry to hear that you'll be off for this season.  Take your time and enjoy this time of recovery the best you can and come back strong later.

Hang in there.  It's good you recognized the warning signs and went to the ER.

You'll be back up and running before long.  My wife has a factor V liden.  She didn't discover it until she had a clot in her leg after giving birth to our first.

She had to take cummadin for her second pregnancy.  She's on an asprin a day now and excercises daily.

Good Luck and Best wishes.  Keep us posted.

Thanks so much for all the replies - based on what everyone has posted, the outlook as far as racing again is better than I envisioned.

ChrisM - I searched over at ST as newbz suggested and found your thread on PE - interesting how closely your story parallels mine. I'm sure I'll be picking your brain for info if you don't mind.

Oh and I like the "Armstrong moment" idea Cue "Six Million Dollar Man" theme...

Sorry to hear this but so glad you didn't ignore the warning signs.  Follow the docs orders and you'll be back at it soon I hope.

I had shoulder surgery 10 weeks ago and am not sure what type of season I'll have either.  Whatever it is I will be thankful for.

Oh, and good for you for volunteering when you can't race and staying involved where you can.
