That's weak!! I emailed them a few months ago and was told the race was 40% full. They should be able to at least tell ppl that since they don't post how many have signed up already.

so lets talk hotels ........

where have you stayed and what did you hear before.

when i was in the military and i did short jobs at c. pendelton, i have stayed at the travelodge and motel6 right outside. really cheap and yes you get what you pay for. close enough to ride your bike downhill to set up transition areas.

What's cheap?
Luckily my little brother just bought a house down there so i'll be staying with him but otherwise i'd consider the Navy Lodge as i'm x military as well.

First Oly on Aug 8th so if all goes well on it i'll be signing up for this race.

I am so on the fence about signing up....  signed up for '09 then got injured....   At least I got $75 back

Only place I stayed was the Guesthouse Inn on Coast Highway.  EZ biking distance down the hill to T1 (but uphill post race).  It's a crapshoot as the skank factor, our room was fine, I heard bad things from other rooms.

I stayed on the Far side of Oceanside at the Best Western Oceanside Inn away from all the crowd and traffic and stayed for 5 days avg 80.00 a night, very clean, very peaceful, close to restraunts. Its very convenient to park at the pier parking and bike 1/2 mile to the race start, tons of people will be doing it day of. Make sure you have five bucks handy for the self serve parking ticket machine, also get there before sunup as the lots will eventually fill up.
I parked there almost every day I was in Oceanside for bike rides or swims I needed to do before the race as well as registration. I swam with a small group around the pier one day, you will not be able to swim the course before the race as it goes through the harbor where all the boats are. Biking groups will be going all over the place so its easy to hook up. Most people run up and down the beach.

I've stayed in Carlsbad a couple of times.  As previously mentioned, parking at the pier and riding the bike to transition is no big deal.  Just have to get up a little earlier and drive the extra few minutes up to Oceanside.  Carlsbad seemed like a much nicer area to stay, but probably wasn't a less expensive alternative.  I don't mind driving a few extra minutes in the morning to stay at a comfortable, quiet hotel the night before.

Well, I may just be stupid enough....

I went ahead and booked a hotel.  The Holiday Inn at the top of the hill above the parking lot.  It's not cheap, but it's close (just go under the tunnel to the harbor), and I want to make it easy on my wife so if she wants she can hang out in the room for the 3+ hours of me on the bike    And I want it to be as un-skeevy as possible.  It's gotten pretty decent reviews.

Now to get the guts to register.....  again

I think I stayed last year at Days Inn, which is in the same general area.  Next to the Holiday Inn, sort of, I think.  Nothing elegant, that's for sure, but it worked.  I did like the location.

I walked from there to the registration area.  I had asked a nice young man that was directing traffic for directions and he told me that it was a "really long way to walk."  I got a kick out of being there to do a HIM and being told that a mile was a long way to walk.

What is not cheap?  I like the idea of being close so my hubby and kids can hang in the room too.  Holiday Inn what city?

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Carlsbad on Palomar Airport Rd.  It is a couple of freeway exits further than the race but it is a decent hotel with Pool/hot tub and in a nice area.  There is a King's Seafood restaurant, PF Chang's, Ruby's, Friday's, Starbuck's, Hagan Daaz, and an outlet mall next door or across the street.

Family really likes staying there even if it is a little further for me in the morning.  I've either gotten a ride from the hotel or rode my bike (10-15 minute easy ride).  Then they drive to the race when they want.  Now they just drive to the Oceanside pier and watch the run as you pass there 4 times.

After the race we site outside at the bar at King's celebrating.  Turns out to be a good day for all.

Rooms are running $133 right now.

Yeah, but check the cancellation policy.  I think that's the nonrefundable rate.  The regular reserve now pay later rate is around $200.

Just checked today, total entrants are at about 2175. Last years total was 2225, 09 was 2115. If anybody is on the fence, now may be the time.

Seeing the actual number of entrants scared me into signing up this morning.  I wanted to wait until after IMKY, but oh well, it's only money.
