Subject: Nipple Chafing- HELP!
Its just my right nipple and it hurts like a bastard.  (Just for the record, I am a dude.)  My nipple started chafing last week and I've just trained through it.  It hurts the most on my runs, but I can feel the pain a bit when riding or just normal day activities.

I've been putting A & D lotion on my nipple to help with the small cuts on my nipple, but it hasn't really helped.  I have a long run (70 minutes) scheduled for tomorrow and I'm worried I'm going to make it worse.

Advice?  I can't be the only person with this problem, right?

Thanks.

I usually solve the problem with a band-aid or moleskin.

Shave off the hair around it first, though.  Trust me on this.

It's been a while since I had this problem (I'm not running anywhere near the distances I used to yet) but I remember I used to use bandaids.

I might even have shaved my nipples to help with removal.

If I remember rightly I applied them immediately I felt pain, more as prevention than cure.

Edit: He must have read my mind

I forgot to deal with mine before a tri this weekend and had to deal with it AFTER it started hurting.

Cover up with some medical tape. "Paper Tape" will work great and come off easier than most. It will stay put too. I put pieces on last night before a swim and a bike ride and they're still there.

You might want to trim around the nipples.

Mine were bothering me while I was helping pack up after the race and the RD had someone find me a couple of bandaids.  That stopped the rubbing and all was good...until I had to remove them.  Took 5 minutes or more of carefully snipping hairs.  The paper tape is waaaaay better, but bandaids will do the trick at the expense of more painful removal later.

Wear a compression shirt. Problem solved.

If your shirt moves on you just thing about 1000 grit sand paper. Once or twice isn't a problem at all. A few hundred times during one run becomes a problem.

Little round bandaids every time you run. Might need to use them for biking and maybe just all day while your nipple heal. Not sure if there's a CVS near you, but they have CVS brand clear ones for about $4. and you get a million of them. I find that if I find one side up so that only 3 sides stick it's 100X easier to get off and provides the same protection.

I think you are covered for further prevention with these helpful posts.
As a woman who breastfed 5 children a total of more than 10 years I can tell you Lansinoh is great for healing and might be a good idea to put some on before going to bed.  You can pick it up at any pharmacy/Target/Walmart etc., it comes in a lavender tube.

Eventually they will callous over!  If that's not an option, then all of the above suggestions will work as I have tried them all.  My first experience with this problem was at the end of my first half marathon, when I looked down at the front of my shirt to see two blood stains where my nipples used to be.

That is what I use and those suckers will not come off by themselves.  For better or worse, the adhesive is good stuff!

I feel your pain. Never had the issue before. Last half marathon, I finished and looked down and realized I was going to be in pain real soon. This is a pic of the last cotton shirt I ever run more then 4 miles in.

I'm a band aid guy too. As someone else alluded to, at least they didn't get to the bloody nipple stage. I've seen some nasty pics of guys with bloody nipples--soaking through their shirts. Shudder.

I've tried all kinds of stuff, what  i use now is Nexcare Durable Cloth tape from the grocery store. Cheap and works great...one roll will last a long time.

I have a really hairy chest, if I trim a little around the area first won't I look like this? Gonna get some looks in the locker room... I'm asking this seriously.

What do you do about Chafing? Although an awkward discussion, I found a cure and thought I would share that along with a couple funny stories involving self humiliation!

I used medical tape. I bought the stickiest tape known to man.  Then I went back and bought the 2nd stickiest tape.  Don't buy the stickiest tape.  Ouch.

Now, I just use glide.

A little BodyGlide before longer runs works for me.

x2

BodyGlide stick has worked for me. And keeps from having to shave the area, or worry about peeling bandaids off afterwards. This has been for run up to full marathon distance in my case.

Also try to wear wicking fabric shirts. NEVER a cotton t-shirt that is gonna get soaked with sweat and get heavy and drape against your chest. Like someone else mentioned.... 1000 grit sandpaper over and over and over....
