You have a very valid point.  Then again, why not record all our goals in time?  That really is the best method of setting up a training schedule anyways, but time!

I agree with using time goals if you are going to use the spinning classes and stationary bikes.

*slaps Joe's hand* Captain's only! Go back to the smack talk thread!

Yeah Mach, counting the time of everything is best, but I say we let the individual decide unless the mileage is unreliable as in the case of spinning, water running, stationary bikes, etc.

I wanted to see about each team choosing their own charity to donate to.  We could still use the same ground rules for amount depending on winning or losing.  This way more charities benefit from our actions.  Just a thought.

Benefits that I see in doing this - chance to benefit bigger group of charities.  Teams can also focus on charities that are important to them.

Drawbacks - Instead of one big ol honking donation, it'll be bigger smaller donations.

I'm happy with the multiple charity approach.  You've got my vote.

So, as far as charities go, I'm sure a victim's fund or something will rise to the top from the London bombing soon. Perhaps that should be the charity?

Captains, Please email to me ([email protected]) your team's actual training month-to-date. Because of the limited # of PMs allowed on BT, the best way for me to receive all the info is via email. Also, I can save your emails instead of having to delete the PMs right away. What can I say? I get lots of PMs.

Many thanks for your cooperation. And keep up the great work!

I'm sure you are all very busy with work and life obligations (slackers). I have received only 3 team updates - Teams Hoss, Crazy 8 and Endless Summer - as of 5:10pm (that's ok, I have nothing else to do but wait). Please send me your team reports at your convenience (get off your ass).

Thanks so much for your cooperation! (don't make me ask you again)

Renee,

You have a life. You've been gracious enough to take this on. Declare a cut-off time and announce that late updates will be posted next Monday. Nobody wins when you declare "Uncle."

This month is all about fun. Please don't kill yourself. Say it with me: "Fun."

Well, I feel better after that little mantra. Fun. Don't kill yourself, sweetie. You have cupcakes to tend to.

Ok, as the spreadsheet is taking form I am thinking of new questions/anticipating issues for the final scoring.

We agreed this would be a make-your-goal-or-not scoring system. Sounds easy enough. Here's a scenario, tell me what you think. Suppose...

  • Team 1 has 6 people who hit their goals in all 3 sports. 3 people hit 80% in all 3 sports. 1 person hits 70% in all 3 sports.
  • Team 2 has 6 people who hit their goals in all 3 sports. 2 people hit 90% in all 3, 1 person hits 80% in all 3, and 1 person hits 50% in all 3 sports.

Who wins? Is it a tie?

If not a tie, how do you decide who wins?

What if a teammember hits their goal in only 2 or 3 sports - is it all or nothing or will their contribution carry some weight?

What about this scenario:

  • Team 1 has 7 people who hit their goals in all 3 sports. 3 people hit 100% in 2 sports and 70% in 1 sport.
  • Team 2 has 7 people who hit their goals in all 3 sports. 3 people hit 100% in 1 sport and 90% in the 3rd sport.

Please weigh in with your thoughts.

Hey Renee -

the scenarios kinda made my head bobble....but the way we're ranking in our team is that we do a percentage for each sport for each person, so each person has 3 percentages. Then I average those percentages and get an overall percent for each person.

Next I add all ten overall percentages and divide by ten to get the team overall percentage. That's the number I think we should compare for deciding which team wins. Since it IS a team effort, some will pull more weight and some less.

In all my calculations, anything more than 100% is thrown out.

I like the idea of capturing the injured player at the point at which they are injured, but that is tough to extrapolate - some people plan to do more of their training as the month goes on, some less, etc. Maybe we just make that person a DNF and don't count them in averaging the team's score.

ANy other ideas? I think the important thing to remember is that we are all inspired to set realistic goals and then to train to our plan....so we all win, eh?

I think we should go with what annabanana describes (and I think CAVU9 had proposed this as well).  Each person gets a score which is the average of their three percentages, and the team score is the average of those numbers (counting 100% as the maximum).  If we use this system, then I would think it would be much less likely we would have a tie. Injured teammates are not counted- I'm not saying that just because we have one, but because there is no good way to figure a fair percentage for that person.

Thanks, Anna.

Here's the problem I see with that calculation. At the beginning, we agreed that it was all or nothing on the goal attainment. Everyone agreed (I believe) that this would not be an aggregrate goal. Anything less than 100% would be thrown out.

For example: if you hit 100% or more of 1 sport but < 100% on the others, you would be 1/3.

I realize it makes one's head bobble (I had to think about constructing hypotheticals just to give you an idea of how the scoring could play out) but I think you guys need to give this more thought.

Or, I could just decide for you.

Hey Renee and other captains:

Honestly I am ok with whatever method you prefer, but I got confused when you said that we agreed to throw out anything less than 100%? So I poked back through this thread and found Cavu9's original post, which is quoted here:

"- Each person gets a percentage completion for each discipline with a max of 100% in each.
- Those 3 percentages then are averaged for that person for an individual score.
- The Team score is then achieved by averaging the individual scores/percentage of all teammates."

I thought that was the scoring system everyone agreed to, but if I am wrong I will gladly be spanked - LOL....

I'm barely able to keep up with posting here - so if you just want to pick something and tell us, that's cool....don't need to belabor the point, just letting y'all know my preferences. I figure as long as we don't count anything over 100%, it's pretty fair. There are days when I can do a bike ride with DS and have to swap with a swim, and it might result in me being 90% on swim and 100%+ on bike goals, but overall I still worked out 95% of my goal time. (And yeah, I know it's not a 1 for 1 trade, but it beats potato chips and Barney on TV!)

Thanks,
Annabanana

I honestly don't remember on agreeing to the 1 of 3 idea or the check-mark system as I call it.  I think that was Lynda suggestion (not intentionally trying to stir the pot) and then she even agreed later with me and the others.  I mean, that is how I sent in my weekly results with a group score taken as an average of each teammember's average.
