So, I called a couple of the hotels on the St. Anthony's list and they said that they were not taking reservations for the tri weekend until Dec 1.  Is it just me or what?   Are yall getting your reservations now or later.  I was afraid to wait to get a hotel from what I have heard, and now the hotels won't let me reserve a room???

dodgersmom - 2005-08-14 1:31 PM I'm going to have to move to Florida.  All the really good races are there.  I may sign up for this since I probably won't be able to do Danskin (if it's the same weekend as last year my Nephew decded to get married on that Saturday).  After a winter of treadmill running and trainer rides I will be aching to get out!!!

C'mon down....everyone else is either here or on the way!

If you are planning on doing this race, I'd suggest you get a hotel/room now.  I'm calling around and if you don't want to fork over $400 per night to stay at the Renaissance Vinoy, you'd better get busy booking one of the few B&B's that are nearby.  Most are already booked with repeat guests for St. A's.

I went ahead and made a reservation at a BnB that is one block from the park (I got the last two rooms that they had).  There are other BnB's around, but all the ones I called were already booked.  I think there's a Hilton Hotel that's down on 2nd Ave, about 4-5 blocks south of the park.  I don't know if BT'rs are gonna have the option of staying in the same place given the skimpy amount of rooms that are available nearby.

I'd call the place you stayed at last year and ask if they have availability.  The BnB's that I called all gave preferential treatment to returning athletes.

But, regardless of where we are all staying, I think the post race party should be at the Vinoy Hotel's Bar.  That was a blast last year and is worthy of repeating.

Hey Karl...how about this...post race party at the place we had the prerace dinner last year (if I can talk the lady into it) and I can try to get a nice keg for the after party (courtesey of DJ ortho of course) ...we can all kick back and relax  on the porch???

Oh yeah maybe I'll see if they will kick in t shirts or something this year

Yeah! Let's design t shirts! How about: "I don't work, I read people's training logs all day on BT."

Hey, this is sounding more and more interesting every time I read it.  I am definitely thinking of going.  As far as getting a hotel, I don't mind if it's 10 or 20 kms away because I will bike in from wherever I am anyways.

Sounds like a plan.  I tried looking for a hotel but no luck, all two or three night minimum.  Not really $$ feasible to stay Sunday night since Tom work and kids school.  I'll come up with one eventually, maybe we'll all bring our bikes to get around from hotel to site!  But...  I'll have to walk back on Saturday!

I stayed in a hotel over on the Gulf side last year.  Plenty of hotels and only about 20 min from the race venue.

Wanted to try and stay close to the race site, but haven't found anything yet.

FWIW I stayed at the Alden last year, and had a decent sized kitchenette with a nice view.

St. Anthony's is a national Team in Training event...sign up for the program and get guranteed entry and expenses-paid trip (as well as a life-changing experience).

(Shameless plug over)

Plugs work! I have just received my info packet from Team in Training and am leaning towards the St. A's Oly instead of the Gulf Coast HIM (which is scheduled for the weekend of May 13th).

The only reason I would do the HIM early in the season is that I am more nervous about raising the money ($2900 vs. $3700) than I am about the increased distances!

Yeah, a lot of people base their event choice on the fund raising levels, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you start early, though, the $3700 is a very doable goal. Both trips are great, GCT is more laid back...fewer chapters do that event. The hotel isn't as nice as the one in St. Pete.

Oh...but regardless of what event you do, Mark Helton is a great coach, and the ATL tri group has a blast.  And, we (the Augusta group) will be travelling to Atlanta to train with the Atlanta group a few times...

YIPPEE! I just got an email from the Madison TNT people-- St A's is a go, meetings start in January, so.... me an' my girl are Florida bound for our first Oly!

I am so excited. I have no idea where/how they will house us, but I know that all I gotta do is train, raise some moolah, and they'll take care fo the rest.

I am very happy.

Awesome, Hollis!!! Maybe you can make the dinner this time! Although, after seeing your race bib pic I totally understand why you didn't make dinner in Orlando.

funny, but not true. the race pic of which you speak was taken at Danskin Pleasant Prairie. and yes, it would have been veeeeeeerrrrry hard to tempt us out of bed that wknd! But I missed dinner in Orlando bc I am a space case and lost my wallet and cell phone, and the backpack in which they were hiding...

I was just looking into this race as my first Olympic - is this a good first race for that distance? I've always done my open water swims in a lake and it looks like this is the ocean, so I'm a little concerned about that...

If your worried about it being rough the good is that the swim is in the bay rather than the Gulf.
