For those that have done it or are in the area, I have seen that the website says the water temperature will be 65-70, that seems pretty chilly to me. I have been swimming in Lake Michigan down in Chicago and I think that is even colder than Lake Michigan. So my question is, is the water really going to that cold on September 10th? I would really like to not get a wetsuit.

I have a couple friends that did it last year and they said the water was pretty chilly. It's a spring fed lake so the water will be colder than other lakes. I'll be there this year, with a wetsuit. I was looking at pics from last years race and it looks like almost everyone is wearing them.
BUT, I swam in Lake Geneva last weekend.......and it didn't seem too cold. I was just in my trunks. This will be my first time doing Lake Geneva so I'm kind of in the same boat you are. Did you know you can rent wetsuits at Fleet Feet in Chicago? Much cheaper than buying one.
By the way, the water is crystal clear. You can see right down to the bottom.

I don't recall being cold last year,  but I had a wetsuit.  It was cool in the morning, I do remember that, and if I remember right it's either a 6:30 am or a sunrise start. But yeah,  I guess it could have been that cold.

If you rent at  Fleet Feet  it costs ~ $50.  Then if you buy a ws from them during the same season they will apply the $50 you paid in rent toward the purchase, so your rental becomes essentially free.  Pretty cool...I did this at Fleet Feet last year (just in time for LG!).

If it is cold and you really don't want to go the wetsuit route, get a neoprene swim cap or a Barracuda swim cap.  They keep your head warm, and since a lot of your body heat escapes through your head, they work pretty well to keep you warm (at least for shorter distances.)

Just put your Barracuda, pull the race cap on top of it, and you're good to go.  It works for me, I don't have a wetsuit yet, but I've been doing this a while.

I should also note that I am doing the sprint, so I will probably not be in the water that long.

MarkK and I are planning to do it, finances permitting (and hoping registration is still open, oops, better check on that).

I think we are both leaning towards doing the 1/2.

After a week of mostly cold and rainy weather, the lake at my tri last weekend was about 60F. I noticed that I was one of only a few people on the beach without a wetsuit, but it wasn't that bad. I was wearing a swim cap, a tri top, and tri shorts. I was a bit chilled after the warmup swim, and needed a few sprints and exercises to get really warmed up then. I didn't notice the water temperature during the race at all though. You can do it.

I'm doing the 1/2 ... just paid last week.

You can register all the way till the day of the race.

Lodging is pretty expensive, $150-$200/night.

We're going up thursday night, and I plan on spending all day friday in the lake with kids. I'll likely take an AM lake swim to try out the wetsuit.

Sister got me a wetsuit from Sam's for something like $30. Brand = Gotcha.

Not sure about it's quality and visual impact on the "cool factor", only that it was [1] free to me, and [2] functional.

I'm glad to see people are talking about this race because I have been preparing for it all summer. For those that have done it before, I understand the run course is very difficult. Is that because of "killer hill" at the 1 mile mark or is the whole course hard? How about the bike course? How hilly is that?

On the issue of water temperature, all I can say is that Lake Michigan was 54 degrees in Zion Illinois last Sunday and the swim got cancelled. Given how warm that Lake has been all summer I now believe anything can happen.

Well I was out there a couple weeks ago and did the begining of the run course and the first 2 miles or so - all hills. Then you come back the same way so ya got hills again. And that "hell hill" is hell. In between that, I'm not so sure cause we didn't go that far. We did the whole Olympic bike course and it wasn't too bad with the hills.

I will be there! My first Tri ever. We swam out there on Saturday, the water wasn't too bad (had wetsuit on). Just came down with a cold, trying to fight it!

For those of you who have been there before. How many waves are there normally? And what time do the festivites start on Friday?

I did the half last year and the bike course wasn't bad as far as hills go.

There are 2 threads for this race....thinking about getting everyone together post-race to cheer on the 1/2 IMers....anyone want to?

I'm in too--really hoping to meet up with everyone.  Kind of scared--my family kind of disappeared on this one.  Won't have anyone there except me--makes me a little nervous.
Now--my concern is that I don't have a wetsuit either--I sure hope I'm not the only one and that the water isn't THAT bad.  Yikes!

Hey Heather,
I can let you borrow my wetsuit if you'd like. I'm done for the year. CindyK can take it with her. It's a Women's L shorty. Let me know.

Hey Brenda!  Thanks so much for the offer!  I am wondering if it would hinder my transition time a TON, since I've never worn one or even tried one on???  What do you think?  Might I be better off practicing first?  Or should I try it?

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIII I'm still out here!!!

And I will be there on Saturday... I don't know if the dog/husband combo will be accompanying me... it's much more logistically simple when they stay home... Although it's fun to have a cheering/barking section...

As for the wetsuit... I will take mine along, but I'm going to try like HE77 not to wear it. I don't think it will be necessary for warmth... We've had a really warm summer this year... and I did Bigfoot earlier in the season without a wetsuit... I don't think it's going to be necessary.

I'm switching from the Half to the Oly. And I'm HAPPY about it... not to scare you all, but we've been riding the run course, and it's hilly. QUITE hilly. The bike course has some hills too... Not insurmountable hills, but enough to make your legs take notice. My training has fallen off significantly in the past 2-3 weeks, and I know I'm not up to the Hilly Half. (!!)

I will look for you all out there... Cindy, I will recognize you... so I will keep my eyes peeled. I'm coming up the morning of the event. Who else will be out there????

Good Luck to ALL!!! See you there!
