Elite 2468 Racine, WI | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri HEEEEEY Whizz! Yeah, that is a tough course to do for your first. Not to say it CAN'T be done of course, but it's a toughie. Anyways...look for me when you cross and I'll look for you when I cross...we should be fairly close to each other and we'll both look for Hiccup and Coredump and all the others at the gazebo I probably won't get my t-shirt on right away but I'll be in a "dust blue" desoto tank and tri shorts. Aasics shoes. Sweaty hair. Big smile while stuffing my face |

Expert 680 NC Illinois | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri Is that because of "killer hill" at the 1 mile mark or is the whole course hard? Yeah, I'm glad they labeled "Frank's Killer Hill" or I wouldn't have know exactl which "hill" was "it". There were/are like 4 good sized hills. During a portion where I was walking the cramps out, myself and another guy wasted time by coming up with names for the other 3 hills that are the "Killer Hill". we came up with some good ones ... some appropriate, some not. |

Master 2139 piece o heaven | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri This is my first year and fourth tri. I am doing the lowly super sprint, but want to do the oly - family wedding in Milwaukee so I got enuff time to race, finish, pack and get home to change. But would love to hear more about the course. It will be another great day - rain or shine! |

Master 2139 piece o heaven | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri You know what, I dont know why I put it there. It will still be a hard hour for a shorter distance. Tri-ing is tri-ing, there is nothing lowly about that. You are right, thanks for slapping some sense into me. That makes my day start with a greater outlook. This is why I love the TriDrug- everyone is so supportive and positive. I am just so used to the 25 years of basketball and negative remarks, whining, moaning, and the ever increasing dirty play. I need to thank my wife for getting me started and her patience and help in my training. If she did not get into these, I would have never discovered the bright world around us. This is a Great Sport and a Great group of People. Have a Great Day! |

Veteran 159 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri Who is doing Lake Geneva this year? I'm doing the Olympic, and I'm very excited, it'll be my first of that distance. Anyone know anything about the swim? I've heard that it is an out and back into deep water. Not necessarily a good thing for me, when I like to be able to put my feet down now and then. Any info is appreciated. Thanks. |

Veteran 183 Buffalo Grove, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri Yeah it's pretty much just an out and back. The water is relatively clear though so visibility is ok. Hopefully they don't mess up the bouys this year. I did the Olympic last year and they had us turn around too soon so the swim ended up being much shorter that it should have been. I got out of the water, looked at my watch and thought I was a total rock star on the swim. But I wasn't really. Also get there early to get your race packet, otherwise you'll wait in a long line. It's a fun race and a beautiful course. Very scenic. Have fun on the hills during the run! There are some killers. |

Veteran 251 Burbs north of Chicago | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri Yes, the swim is out and back. They completely screwed up the distance last year. My swim time was 21 minutes and believe me that is not correct. I probably should have been between 30 and 35 minutes so the swim significantly short. Same race director screwed up Lake Delavan this year so you can only hope he has gotten the message by now. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Really, everything else is pretty cool about this race. I really liked the bike course. The run course is as hard as you are going to find but that makes it an interesting challenge. Walk the hills, you will not be able to run them much faster unless you are a REALLY strong runner. I would like to do it again but I think my wife would kill me if I did this race. Good luck!! |

Veteran 159 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri A miss measured swim would probably be a good thing for me. The shorter the better! Anyone been in the lake recently? How cold is it? I don't have a wet suit, and was hoping not to have to rent one. What's everyone think? Edited by trithat 2006-08-21 3:37 PM |

Master 1670 Harvard, Illinois | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri I am not a big fan of Frank Dobbs' triathlon events. The distances are wrong and he doesn't have a secure transition area. Anyone can walk up to your stuff and walk away with it. Several people have complained to the USAT but I don't know what is happening with that. |

Member 414 | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri That being said has anyone ever lost anything of value at one of his events? I hear a lot about how much he sucks and all but I have to say it is a cool course and close to home, both pluses in my book. |

Master 2139 piece o heaven | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri So far in my first year I have not lost anything (knock on wood). I am signed up and fired up! Nice to hear it is a good course. I am looking forward to it. The following week I am racing at Devil's Lake. I have put 2 weeks between races this year but ot just one week. I love the challenges!!!!!!!! Hope to meet a few BT's at the courses |

Champion 5495 Whizzzzzlandia | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri I am planning to be there this year again... It is a very disorganized event, I think, but the venue and the lake more than make up for it. I'm doing the Half. I was supposed to do the Half last year, but I finked out at the last minute. This year I've been training my A$$ off, so if I can't do it this year, I will probably NEVER be able to do it, PERIOD. I didn't wear a wetsuit last year, but will probably opt to wear one this year, just for the speed. I've finally mastered taking the dang thing off. Hope to see some familiar faces out there in a couple of weeks.

Expert 924 Louisville, KY | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri This is the race that got me motivated to start training for a triathlon this year. Its a long, 8-9 hour, drive for me to get there, but I'm turning it into a 4 day weekend. Plus, we are staying at my wife's aunt's kick-@ss house on the lake, less than a mile to the race start. It will be my second tri, first Oly, in my first triathlon season. Can't wait to do it & can't wait for it to be over so the "lake weekend" party can start! Hopefully, meet a few BT'ers in the process. |

New user 2 | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri This is my first triathlon season and I completed 3 sprints and signed up for the Lake Geneva Olympic length to finish the year. All 3 sprints I've really struggled with the swim part and the past 2 weeks have not been in the water for one reason or another. For those of you that have done the course (or graduated from sprints to olympic), would you recommend just doing the sprint and saving the Olympic challenge for next year after an off-season of improving my swimming? Really glad I find this site! Great information here! Thanks - and good luck everyone! |

Veteran 251 Burbs north of Chicago | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri That really depends on how much you are able to swim now. If you are already swimming that distance I would go for it as it will be a big confidence booster heading into the off-season. On the other hand, if it will be a stretch to complete that distance you should know that this swim course is out and back. In other words, you swim away from the beach to a buoy and come back as opposed to swimming along the shore. This was my first tri last year and I found that intimidating. Again, if you are comfortable with the distance then I would not let the course persuade you against going for it. The race has a relaxed atmosphere so you don't have to deal with a lot of kicking and elbows in the beginning. Last, I assume from the way you asked this question that you are comfortable with the Olympic distance in biking and running. You probably already read that this run course is difficult. However, in a way it is not that bad if you resign yourself to the fact that you WILL be walking the hills. They are just too tough to run unless you are an incredible runner. |

New user 2 | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri Thanks for the feedback! Everyone has talked about last year's swim being extremely short - was that just an error last year compared to previous years? I'll be heading up on Friday - just not sure what time I'll be up there since I have to drop the dog off at "camp". |

Expert 760 Mt. Morris, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri trithat - 2006-09-05 3:05 PM Anyone have information on how the swim start takes place? Are the scheduled start times accurate, and if so HOW?????? Just one large wave per race group? Last year it was one wave per distance and was NOT a problem. The swim distances were way short (for the 1/2 I was out in 19min) but I never felt crowded or like I was getting hit a lot. In IMWI I have to start with over 2500 people in one wave, so I think the 100 or so your race will be okay. Edit: Anyone notice this is a year old thread? Edited by nccgrap 2006-09-06 12:57 PM |

Veteran 251 Burbs north of Chicago | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri nccgrap - 2006-09-06 12:56 PM Last year it was one wave per distance and was NOT a problem. Actually, I remember differently. There are different waves for each race. The only reason I remember this is that I went up there with two friends to do the Olympic and one was in my wave and one was not. However, everything else nccgrap said was correct. It really is not a problem. |

Member 16 Elmhurst, IL | Subject: RE: Lake Geneva Tri Some people were asking about the lake. I've never done a triathlon there, but I used to fish and swim there all the time. The lake is big, deep, crystal clear, and usually pretty cold. We haven't had much cold weather around here yet, so it may not be too bad. Most of the wave action I've seen is generated by the boat traffic. The place usually gets crazy on the weekends. Early in the morning, this shouldn't be a problem. Good luck, I might head up there to watch. |
