I suggest reading through it for some good info (and a lot of bad info). I race in an aero helmet. They're the best "bang for the buck" aero investment. The speed gains are real and measurable, but not huge. Regardless of how fast/slow you are, you will most likely benefit from an aero helmet. There are a couple of professional triathletes who choose not to wear one for Ironman, but that's mostly because they're so fast that they can still win without it, not because it wouldn't make them faster. I can't think of any good reason to wear one on training rides. Like disc wheels, they're a race day accessory. Uhm, no, this doesn't make sense. You might as well say they don't need race wheels either because they are fast enough to win without them. They are all pros and all want every benefit they can. Some choose to go with a regular helmet due to heat/other issues, NOT because they are fine leaving free speed on the table... No, I stand with my original comments. They choose to go without the incremental benefit of an aero helmet in order to capitalize on some extra cooling and/or comfort. Your original comments said they gave up the benefit of the aero helmets because they were fast enough to win without it. It didn't say anything about cooling and comfort (which is what I and others have said since then). It doesn't really matter- I just thought it was funny that you pointed out all the bad info and then propogated more bad info.
Maybe they don't wear aero helmets because they look so dorky. |

No. People aren't pointing to number 1, they're pointing to the fallacy of number 2: buying an aero helmet and practicing staying in the aero position are mutually exclusive. Doing one does not in any way affect your ability to do the other. Practice staying aero. Aero helmet or not, you'll be faster the longer you can stay in it. Go buy an aero helmet. You'll be faster regardless of how long you can stay aero. Along the same lines, I have a dream that some day everyone will be convinced that the behavior of air as it moves past an object doesn't magically change at some arbitrary number like 18, 20, or 25 mph. You guys all know that the number is 29 kilometers an hour. Since air doesn't start moving until 18 mph, you have to measure anything less in kilometers an hour....DUH! |

Where in your original post do you say the bit about subjective comfort? I agree with you, but you never said this in your first post (that you keep refering to as you standing by the comments. All you said in the first post was that they were fast enough to not worry about it. Not worrying about it and subjective comfort are distinct things). Anyway, this is silly. We should get off this board and go ride :-) |
