Sunny
Total Time = 6h 39m 59s
Overall Rank = 1304/2300?
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 173/?
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5, ate breakfast, headed to transition.
Event warmup:

40 minute bike the night before... too long and too fast i think...
Swim
  • 39m 48s
  • 1950 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not too shabby considering I cant swim in a straight line, the waves were slapping me around, and I drank a lot of salt water.
What would you do differently?:

nothing... note for future: earplugs worked like a charm. Felt good coming out of the water. No dizziness.
Transition 1
  • 05m 58s
Comments:

Yep, I suck at transitions... just took my time to make sure I didn't forget anything.
What would you do differently?:

Probably nothing. The transition area was huge. For a race this distance, it's worth a few extra minutes to not kill myself in transition and not forget anything.
Bike
  • 3h 10m 12s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Did better than I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Practice nutrition more. My body wouldnt take anything the last 10 miles.
Transition 2
  • 05m 7s
What would you do differently?:

Once again, take my time and make sure I dont forget anything... I also made a quick potty stop.
Run
  • 2h 38m 10s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Stomach felt slushy at the start. Maybe too much water on the bike? Bonked out around mile 3... nashty cramp, heart rate through the roof. I had to run/walk the last 7 miles. Also, the stuff I was counting on being on the course was not as advertised...
Compression calf sleeves on bike and run worked well.

What would you do differently?:

Not sure. My stomach just wouldnt take anything...
Post race
Warm down:

lay on ground. one bite on pizza, but stomach didnt want any of that! Waddle to transition, get clothes bag & bike and back to hotel for power nap. Probably gonna regret not taking ice bath...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably just wasnt quite ready for this distance... but I still finished MOP

Event comments:

Great organization. Some of the stuff listed in the guide was not correct... ex: orange gatorade on bike course (it was lemon lime) and there was no coke on run course (it was pepsi... and wasnt de-fizzed).
Overall, great race though!

I did better than expected on the swim and the bike...

On the swim, my goggles fogged up pretty fast... I just kept going without really being able to see.  I kept getting really far off to the right b/c I couldnt sight and I think the big waves were pushing me out.  About half way, I just stopped and rubbed the fog out of the inside... great decision!

My sighting technique is good for lakes, but was not good for large waves.  I got salt water up my nose and down throat quite a few times... possibly one of the reasons my stomach was jacked up.

As soon as I got on the bike, I could feel my left hip flexor.  Thank the Lord it never got worse.  My neck was sore most of the time and my butt (probably from flat course w/ no position changes.  I couldn't really tell how my legs were doing.  They didnt feel as fresh as the day before.  Winds were nasty 20+ with gusts over 30mph.  I also got pelted by some sand periodically.  Got off the bike feeling good, but it didnt last long...

At the start of the run my legs did not feel as fresh as my 2 long bricks w/ runs after.  I think I either pushed too hard on the bike, or the constant flat course took a toll... and as mentioned, I maybe shouldnt ride as much/hard the day before.

Overall, great race.  I was having fun up until about mile 3 when I got a nashty cramp.

I've actually had this exact same experience happen to me (sloshy stomach). I've nailed it down to getting in the right nutrition on the bike, but going TOO HARD, and then the stomach just isn't able to process it all because of the oxygen going to the muscles preferentially. As a result, you get a killer bike split but totally far apart on the run from lack of calories, inability to take in extra calories, and bike overkill. Am I close??

Anyway, it's a phenomenal effort, and I heard conditions were really tough out there!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!

Also, I wanted to say that if the race distance is intimidating, or in the first few times you do it, there's no such thing as "taking it too easy" on the bike if it sets you up for a killer run. That's not too easy, that's just KILLER RACE EXECUTION.

Do you think you'll do another??

Solid race, my friend!  I think the run, coupled with the heat/humidity, got to most of us out there.  Keep it up.
