Subject: Bike commute to work starts Monday

So Monday, I start bike commuting to work.  I'm really excited about it!  This is something I've been thinking about doing for 6+ months since I'm lucky enough to have a small gym w/ shower in our office building.  I kept trying to figure out how to do it on a road bike but I just couldn't map it out safely and without lots of flat tire possibilities.  The mountain bike is all set up and the waterproof panniers come UPS today.  I had to go waterproof due to all the rain we get in central Florida.

It's going to be about 12 miles each way.  I'd love to say I'm doing this to save money on gas (drive a F150) but it's really about getting more miles on the bike.  Saving money on gas is just a nice side effect.  The other side effects that I'm hoping for are a few dropped pounds and being a lot stronger on the weekend rides after pushing that tank of bike all week long.

Good or bad, I'll update this next week on how it goes.  Any good tips are much appreciated as well.  Have a great Friday!!!

Good on ya! Welcome to the club! You've got showers at work so that's more than half the battle.

My advice, if you don't already have them, buy a rearview mirror, flashing tail light, & hi-vis clothing. Allow some extra time early on to explore variants on your route. There may be quieter streets that parallel your route.

Good luck!

I have been thinking about doing the same.  I'm even more motivated to do it now after reading your post!  Let me know how it goes.

Rode in today. Loved it. I rode to work some last year, but I'm considering doing this a lot more with the need for more miles. Saving $$$ on gas is pretty cool too.

Enjoy, and be careful.

i do the same (15 mile ride to work) and i love it! the only problem is that i work the loading docks and we recently changed to a 4am schedule and i need a more powerful light than the one i have to safely make the trip so i've been out of riding for about 2.5 weeks. oh well.

Awesome! I've been bike-commuting more and more this summer, ~16 miles each way. It's completely addictive. I'm going to have to get some serious lights as the days get shorter because I'm riding as long as I can stand the cold. As I mentioned on my blog, the very best part is riding by 2 gas stations along the way. I think I'll add the gas & car upkeep $ I'm saving to my mental budget for a new road bike.

I would also like to trade my carbon credits on the open market.

p.s., nliedel: can the kids ride their bikes to school?

Rode my mtn bike into work today.  It was great!!  I packed all my stuff up last night so I would be ready to leave without much effort this morning.  I bought this pack from http://www.twowheelgear.com that allows me to pack nice clothes and it worked great.  Left the house at 6:30am and was walking in the door at work around 7:15am (11.6 miles).  Traffic will definitely be heavier on the way home so that will be interesting.  The biggest problem is that it's so hot/humid here in Florida that it takes a while to cool off before showering.  Not a big problem in the grand scheme of things.  I think this is going to be addictive :-)

I wondered how it went.

Florida. The only place I have ever lived where I could sweat in the shower.

Good stuff! Gas prices are crazy. I'm trying to ride more to save $. I feel kinda spoiled since my commute is barely 6 miles each way and I can do most of it on a bike path. It's such a nice way to start the day! And, I don't really work up a sweat either.

Good job!  I ride mine every once in a while.  It has to be planned carefully, since I wear a business suit at work.  Be careful when commuting.  Ride like you're invisible!

Way to get out there.
So how was the ride home?
Ever think about going in on sundays and dropping off a weeks worth of clothes so you don't have to haul them back and forth? works great!

I haven't experience the ride home.  My bag didn't come until yesterday so this morning was my first ride into work.  As for coming in on Sunday, I have to be honest.  The last thing I want to do is take the time out of a nice Sunday to show up here.  Don't get me wrong, I really like my company/job but I have no desire to take at least an hour out of a Sunday to come in.  Plus, my office is on the 5th floor so there would be the whole issue of going up to my office in my sweaty clothes (don't know who I would run into in the halls), then back down to the gym on the 1st floor to shower and then back up to my office.  I'd rather just haul it in.

Tomorrow morning, my little boy starts kindergarten ... on his bike! We're planning a family bike trip to school the first morning. Jr. is so excited he can hardly sleep at night.

Another one is assimilated!

I ride in a couple of days a week, and absolutely love it. I wouldn't be able to get in many miles on the bike if it weren't for the commute.

I cope with the "sweating after the shower" thing by trying to spin the last mile or so in and take it easy. I then take the shower cold, and usually I'm OK by that point.

Wait until this afternoon's ride home..the heat makes it interesting! I can tell you from experience, make sure you are hydrated. I sometimes stop a store about 3/4 of the way home and chug an entire bottle of Gatorade.

Yall are making me feel guilty for not riding to work!

We started bike to work Fridays several months ago and I bike several times to work. With training for a 1/2 ironman it was difficult to get rides in around group workouts so I stopped biking commuting. I'm training for another 1/2 in October after that I will bike to work more, maybe try for twice a week.

Great job to everyone that bike commutes!

He could drive them to school, leave the car at the school, and bike from school to work...

unless the schedule doesn't allow enough time for that...

I have also driven to work in the AM, back home for lunch, then bike back to work for the afternoon... doesn't save much on the gas, but gets some mileage in...

It's funny - I was driving to work this morning and it occured to me that in the past month or so, there are ALOT more people riding their bikes. I don't know if it's the gas prices or what, but at $3.00/gal (my car must have the highest octane - something about turbo-charges and being addicted to speed and acceleration ...) I am wondering how many days a week I can ride too...

Wow, those panniers look great! I have wondered if there was something like this. I still need to gain more skills on my bike before I'm out in city traffic, but I have bookmarked those panniers for future reference. Good luck with commuting.

Keep safe, I started this summer to commute to work it's 16 miles each way. Granted I work 24hr shifts and only work 2-3 days a week but it is added extra milage and I don't feel as guilty because I can't run, bike, or swim for those 24 hrs. BTW I figured it out I will save an extra $60 a month easily.

I didn't fall or get injured, that's the good news.  The bad news is my left crank fell off.  Yes you read that correctly.  It fell off.  Oh yeah, and I had already picked up a nail in my rear tire prior to that but the leak was slow so I had a shot at making it home.  Using a 35lb bike as a scooter for 5+ miles is not fun.  I guess I should have taken the bike in for a tune-up but who thinks a crank is going to fall off.  Lost the bolt also.  Off to drink a couple of beers and shower :-)

I'm contemplating the Karmic reprocussions of laughing at your expense... heck... I'm going to risk getting a flat my next time out.

That is Bloody Hillarious. I'm picturing a grown man pushing a scooter and it's killing me.

Sounds like you're being a good sport and this won't keep you from getting back on the horse... bike commute... whatever...

Congrats on your choice of 2 wheels over 4!

I find that the best part of cycle commuting is not the substantial $$ savings, not the knowledge that you are polluting less, not the healthier lifestyle, but rather it's the fact that by the time you get home you will have forgotten you were at work at all! It's just as if you were out for an afternoon bike ride.

Take care out there!
